For corporate innovators, BCG’s 2024 report is pretty clear.   👇 You’re either leading the pack or lagging behind – and the majority are lagging. Too many laggards are stuck in a single model like internal labs, in an isolated island of innovation that won't spread across the mainland organization. 🏝️ Advanced innovators are focusing more attention outside the organization, adopting an open innovation model to rapidly match demand-driven problems with adoption-ready solutions. And they are using a systematic approach to achieve repeatable outcomes at enterprise scale. These “innovation pack leaders” are seeing higher returns with lower investments. They can also apply their innovation systems to accelerate other corporate priorities including AI transformation 🤖 and meeting ESG commitments ☀️ Recently I’ve teamed up with other experienced innovation executives to guide industry associations who want to be pack leaders by helping their members de-risk and accelerate return-on-innovation. Guess I’m a bit late to share, but the IMPACT FESTIVAL was too good not to talk about! 🌍 Ever wondered how we can collectively shape a sustainable future? 🍀 Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of joining the Impact Festival in Frankfurt - one of Europe’s largest events for sustainable innovation and investments, with over 5000 participants from business, politics and academics. Being among professionals dedicated to improving our society and planet was truly inspiring. There was so much to learn, with deep dives into critical topics like biodiversity, the circular economy, sustainable cities, and even the complexities of ESG data. I found the panel discussion "Beyond Growth - Redefining Prosperity for the Future" with Carlos Alvarez Pereira, Agata Meysner, Prof. Dr. Stephan Hankammer and Fabian Eckert especially thought-provoking. They unpacked the need for new definitions of prosperity in a world where growth needs to align with environmental and social goals. For this, we need new ideas and technologies by companies that take responsibility. Still, to bring these ideas to life, it takes visionary minds backed by private capital. This was why I found the sessions on impact investing so engaging, especially hearing from VCs on the role of sustainability in financial markets for startups: 💡Impact-focused startups don't really differ from traditional ones: they need a strong team, a smart business plan, and to solve real problems. 📈With today's global challenges, startups that tackle societal and environmental issues have the potential to drive economic growth as well as positive impact. 🌿Purely purpose-driven startups may struggle to secure traditional VC funding but can explore alternative financing to bring their ideas to life. TechQuartier‘s Impact Challenge was a good example for bridging the gap between startups and corporates, empowering sustainable and innovative solutions for a greener, more social tomorrow.
