Not sure what to expect in a data analyst interview? Here's a little secret: They probably won't ask you to calculate the square root of pi. I mean, unless you're applying to NASA, in which case, good luck, and may the force be with your calculator! But seriously, data analyst interviews are more likely to involve questions about your ability to work with data. Think more along the lines of: - "How would you clean this messy dataset?" (No, a mop and bucket won't cut it.) - "Tell us about a time you had to use data to solve a problem." (And no, deciphering your cat's food preferences doesn't count, even if it did involve a spreadsheet.) They might also throw in a few brain teasers just to see if you can think on your feet. But don't worry, nothing too crazy. Think more like: - "How many golf balls can fit in a school bus?" (The answer isn’t 'Why would you do that to a school bus?') And of course, there’s the classic: - "Where do you see yourself in five years?" (Hint: The correct answer is NOT 'On a beach, sipping a margarita.')

LinkedIn's community algorithm is messing with me. I implemented these Friday career posts a couple of months after taking over External Communications at Women+ in Geospatial, and they've really taken off. We share a list of jobs that our network sends to us, via tags or DMs, and today was our 25th post. These posts get thousands of impressions and hundreds of clicks, and our follower growth has massively picked up. Do you know what today also was? The second time we were auto-flagged by LinkedIn for "discriminatory language" that violates the professional guidelines. Yes, we are a professional network for women+, but nowhere in the post does it say that only women can apply for these roles. Yes, people send us these positions because they want to reach more diverse candidates, but really anyone in the industry can benefit from the list. Each time we are flagged, our post gets removed, and I have to appeal the case. That is wasted time where we lose out on engagement with our community. It's frustrating, but I have to hope that the algorithm gets a little smarter each time we appeal.

When I spent 2020 indoors, teaching myself how to code, I was already 5 years into my geospatial career. Prior to then, I had never had the time or space to focus on learning and when I first attempted to learn in one of my first roles, not only was I not well supported, I was laughed at. I’m really glad I didn’t internalize those responses, but learning how to program has open up career paths in GIS that I didn’t even know existed including my current career in data engineering.
