Gender equality in the Olympic Games has seen remarkable progress since the inception of the modern Olympics in 1896 when no women were included. The turning point came in 1900 when 22 women were allowed to participate, which accounted for 2.2% of the athletes. After the First World War, only five events were open to women. By the mid-20th century, this percentage had reached almost 10%. Significant progress was made by the end of the 20th century, with women comprising 40% of the participants. In 2024, the Paris Olympics made a historic achievement by becoming the first Games to achieve full gender parity, with an equal number of male and female athletes participating. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the Olympic Movement's ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in sports. The Bulgarian delegation consists of 54.35% women. Good luck to each athlete, regardless of the gender! 🏆🥇🎉

CHAMPIONING EQUALITY Gender equality in sports is about providing equal opportunities, respect, and resources for all athletes, regardless of gender. It ensures that both male and female athletes have the same chances to compete, train, and achieve their goals in their chosen sports. This focus on equality in sports helps to shape attitudes towards fairness and mutual respect, making sports a powerful tool for promoting social equality. When we support and promote gender equality, we create a fairer and more balanced world, breaking down stereotypes and inspiring young boys and girls to pursue their dreams with confidence and without barriers. The 2024 Paris Olympics represented a major milestone for gender equality in sports. For the first time in modern Olympic history, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allocated equal quota places for male and female athletes. Women made up 50% of the 10,500 athletes competing, reflecting a strong commitment to inclusivity and fairness. International Olympic Committee – IOC | Abhinav Bindra Foundation #OlympicValues #OVEP

‼️Sport as a Catalyst for Equality‼️ Yesterday I attended the official presentation of the “Equality Moves” campaign, a collaborative initiative by the Ministry for Gender Equality and Diversity and the Ministry of Sports. This campaign highlights that sport is so much more than physical activity. It is a universal language that brings people together, breaks down barriers, and drives societal change. 🫱🏼🫲🏽 It is undeniable that women’s sports still faces many stereotypes and challenges - from the way female athletes are portrayed in the media to unequal opportunites. The historic milestone of equal participation between male and female athletes at the PARIS2024 Olympics was a huge step forward, but it’s far from the finish line. True equality requires continued effort, and this isn’t just a “women’s issue” - it’s a cause that concerns all of us! Each of us has a role to play in breaking down stereotypes, challenging biases, and pushing dor a more inclusive, fair sports culture. Together we can create a lasting change ! 💪🏻 #Equalitymoves #Inclusion #sportsforall #change #sports #womensports #equalityinsport #sportletzebuerg

In 1900, the Olympic Games in Paris saw the participation of women for the very first time. Only 2% of the athletes were women—a small but significant step forward. Today, as we close the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, we’ve witnessed a historic milestone: 50% of the athletes were women. This remarkable achievement, 124 years in the making, shows that gender equality in sports is not just a dream but a reality. Women and men now compete for the same number of medals and receive equal recognition on the world stage. This journey has been long and challenging, but it serves as a powerful reminder that equality is possible. Even in areas where change seems difficult or distant, progress is within our reach. Let’s carry this spirit forward and continue striving for equality in all aspects of life. 🚀 #Equality #Olympics #Inclusion #Diversity #Progress

For the first time in history, the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will see an equal number of men and women competing. This 50:50 representation of athletes makes the Summer Games the first to reach gender equality. Some say "it's about time". We say "it's always been time". #womenpowered #womenownedbusiness

When it comes to gender equality, Norwegian Handball Federation are the pioneers of our sport. If you ask NHF Secretary General, Erik Langerud, one of the clearest markers of Norway’s success is the NHF executive board, which has women in seven of the 11 positions. “Equal doesn’t have to mean that it has to be 50:50. At some points, it’s 70:30 or 80:20 towards women or towards men,” he says. Read the inspiring story by our journalist Courtney Gahan to find out more interesting facts about NHF’s effective implementation of gender equality strategy, why they believe federations shouldn’t let the market set the tone, the positive benefits it brings and the challenges along the way. ⬇ #genderequality #genderequalitystrategy
