In November 2023, our #Trent1000 engine made history by powering the world's first 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) transatlantic flight by a commercial airline. The flight represented a major milestone for the entire aviation industry in its journey towards net zero carbon emissions and demonstrated the capability of SAF as a safe drop-in replacement for jet fuel. This week Virgin Atlantic headline report set out key findings, including how the use of 100% SAF saved the lifecycle equivalent of 95 tonnes of CO2, or 64% of the emissions of a standard London Heathrow to New York JFK flight. Further benefits include a 40% reduction in particulates, which could contribute to a significant reduction in contrail production. Read more: https://ow.ly/NiJc50RAGRe #PowerofTrent #Flight100

So the engines can take the fuel type and its proven. That is the case for most engine types. The problem is the fuel availability. What is the plan to increase production and over what timescale. Another question I ask myself is, is the available SAF of better use to the high cycle inter European (or equivalent) type of operation where the main fuel burn is at Take Off rather than Long Haul operations.

Climate change is already creating huge disruption and losses in terms of floods and droughts. The faster we adapt these technologies, the better it will be for all of us.

The problem is that the SAF used today is not SAF, but just another AF. It‘s not sustainable over the whole life cycle.

Able to reduce 64% of the emissions give a revolutioner in the engine world..Excellent RR

An incredible achievement after only 120 years since Frederick Henry Royce and Charles Rolls first met. Also a huge step forward as we move towards being environmentally friendly and eventually achieving Net Zero status. Let's join together to congratulate, whether we work for RR, fly with them or simply admire the technology. To friends and colleagues I say "hello" and look forward to seeing you soon, whether home or afar.
