As a student who is going to be at the forefront of the future of aviation, I have learned the importance of sustainable aviation due to environmental challenges it poses through carbon emissions. However, the industry is not ignoring these issues. As the aviation sector works towards decarbonization, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is going to be key to helping propel aviation towards net-zero emissions. In November 2023, our #Trent1000 engine made history by powering the world's first 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) transatlantic flight by a commercial airline. The flight represented a major milestone for the entire aviation industry in its journey towards net zero carbon emissions and demonstrated the capability of SAF as a safe drop-in replacement for jet fuel. This week Virgin Atlantic headline report set out key findings, including how the use of 100% SAF saved the lifecycle equivalent of 95 tonnes of CO2, or 64% of the emissions of a standard London Heathrow to New York JFK flight. Rolls-Royce has also completed compatibility testing of 100% SAF on all our in-production civil aero engine types providing further proof that there are no engine technology barriers to the use of 100% SAF. SAF-powered transatlantic flight reduced emissions by 64%: Virgin Atlantic Virgin Atlantic shared emissions data of its maiden transatlantic flight from London Heathrow to New York JFK Airport saying that the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on the flight cut emissions by 64% compared to standard flight operated on Jet A-1. “A full lifecycle analysis – showing a saving of 95 tonnes of CO2, or 64% of the emissions produced from a standard flight from London Heathrow to New York JFK,” said the airline in its finding. ASL Aviation Ltd Holdings has signed an agreement with ZeroAvia for up to 20 hydrogen-electric engines for retrofit into its operated fleet of ATR regional turboprop aircraft, creating some of the world’s first zero-emission freight aircraft of this scale.
