In honour of Black History Month, RCM London hosted members of The Amos Bursary, including Co-founder and Chief Executive Colleen Amos OBE, Board Member Richard Butler, Amos students, and alumni. Students recounted their month-long summer work experience in New York, including an insight day at RCM’s NYC office. The Amos team also discussed the role diversity and inclusion play in achieving excellence in the workplace and their personal journeys with the Bursary’s support. We appreciate their insightful contributions on such an important topic and look forward to continuing our partnership.

It was an honour to have attended The Amos Bursary Black History Month Panel Discussion and Networking Reception at the historic #Guildhall, London. This event was not only a celebration but a powerful reminder of the resilience, ingenuity, and potential within our communities. And for those who know, there’s no experience quite like The Greatest Homecoming on Earth (#GHOE) at North Carolina A&T State University. 💙💛 Homecoming is more than just a friends and family reunion. Yes, it’s about reconnecting with classmates, reliving memories, and building new ones. But it’s also a significant economic engine for local communities. From hotels, restaurants, and transportation to small business vendors, event planners, and entertainment, these celebrations' ripple effect can be felt far beyond the campus gates. Studies show that large-scale HBCU homecomings, like GHOE, pump millions of dollars annually into the regional economy. This infusion supports small businesses, provides seasonal jobs, and showcases Black entrepreneurship at its finest. When I think about legacy, I’m not just thinking about my own—I’m reflecting on the powerful legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) like Tougaloo College, which have been pillars in our communities for over a century. HBCUs are more than institutions of higher learning—they are places where dreams are nurtured, where leaders are forged, and where history is made. From their founding in the 1800s to their continued impact today, HBCUs like Tougaloo have always been where history meets the future. They’ve equipped generations of Black leaders—educators, advocates, scientists, doctors, and innovators—with the tools to not only succeed but to transform their communities. Tougaloo’s motto, “Where History Meets the Future,” isn’t just a tagline; it’s a shared mission. In my work—whether at UNCF or now in the charter school space with National Charter Collaborative—this legacy inspires me. It’s about carrying the torch forward and asking, "How do we create an ecosystem of education that uplifts all of us?" How do we ensure that the legacy of institutions like Tougaloo continues to shape the future for generations to come? HBCUs have always been at the forefront of progress, building pathways to equity and liberation even in the face of systemic barriers. ICYMI | Next year, Howard University is expected to gain Research-1 status, the coveted Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classification for doctoral universities with very high research activity. HBCU leaders and experts say Howard’s ascendance would be a win for the entire sector as more historically Black institutions strive to make it into the upper echelons of research. Currently 10 other HBCUs have R-2 status, connoting high research activity; a couple are already hot on Howard’s heels, falling just shy of meeting the criteria for next year. R-1 status has become a badge of honor in the higher ed world, known to attract high-caliber faculty and prestigious research funding opportunities. But for two decades, the designation has eluded historically Black colleges and universities, many of which remain hampered by chronic underfunding and other challenges. Multiple HBCUs have been vying to join the ranks of R-1 universities, galvanizing their faculty to apply for grants and funneling unprecedented resources into research.
