A great day on Friday at the Adopting Net-Zero solutions in the South West Buildings Industry Conference. Fascinating exploration of the research carried out by Hanne Knight and Giles Bradford made possible with the support of University of Plymouth, Bradfords Building Supplies Ltd and the Net-Zero Exchange projects fund. We dove into the dynamic between architects, builders, builders merchants and end users to examine where the knowledge, skills and power lay and where the gaps were in applying new more sustainable building methods, materials, processes and finishes. From planning, design, cost and utility perspectives, incorporating barriers perceived and real both hidden and overt across the whole landscape. Great perspectives from Nigel Jackson on behaviour change from Plymouth Business School. Tim Myatt from ADAPTAVATE shared the low carbon materials of tomorrow that are here today. Chris Weston from Coastline Housing on the policies affecting building regulation and a housing association perspective too. Finally wrapped up by Adam Parsons ARB RIBA with a fascinating case study on the The Wave and designing carbon out of construction. A project particularly close to my heart! 🌊 🏄 We then had a selection of workshops, one of which I led with the support of Susan Jane Langford on Net-Zero and climate change. WGBC Building Life Analysis Report 2024 | World Green Building Council   The BuildingLife initiative, led by the World Green Building Council, unites 12 European Green Building Councils to spearhead climate action and pave the way for a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. This project addresses not only operational emissions but also the full spectrum of environmental impacts, including manufacturing, transportation, construction, and end-of-life phases of buildings. By focusing on whole-life carbon (WLC), BuildingLife is redefining sustainability in the built environment.   Over 1,550 stakeholders, including policymakers, developers, and industry leaders, have collaborated on national roadmaps that align with key European Union policies such as the Green Deal and Fit for 55. These roadmaps prioritize reducing embodied carbon, increasing the use of bio-based materials, and emphasizing renovation over new construction. While significant progress has been made, more work is needed to engage governments fully and implement these changes into national legislation.   Looking forward, the project will focus on enhancing training programs, improving data transparency, and fostering a culture of sustainability among all industry players. By creating robust frameworks for WLC measurement and reporting, BuildingLife aims to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon future.
