Today is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Modern slavery takes many forms—human trafficking, sexual exploitation, forced marriages, child labour, and more. It thrives in silence, inaction, and everyday choices. But change doesn’t have to start with monumental acts. It begins with the small, impactful steps you take every day. 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥. A simple conversation at work, with friends, or in your community can spark awareness and inspire action. Share what you know about buying from reputable brands, checking slavery statements, and supporting businesses with ethical supply chains. 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟: Are your choices reflecting respect and dignity for all people? 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥. Your influence can inspire others to shift their habits and choices, creating a ripple effect that transforms lives. Speak up, take action, and join us in the fight to end modern slavery. What is International Day for the Abolition of Slavery? The UN Day for the Abolition of Slavery is an annual observance that is threefold – eradicating modern and contemporary forms of slavery, raising awareness about human trafficking, and promoting the rights and dignity of all people. This day serves as a reminder and a call to action. 👉🏼 A reminder that modern slavery still exists in countries like Australia. 👉🏼 A call to action to do something to end the abuse, manipulation and exploitation of vulnerable people. When is it? The UN observes the Abolition of Slavery every year on 2 December. The focus of today is “on eradicating contemporary forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, the worst forms of child labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.” It provides an opportunity for governments, organisations, and businesses across the world to come together and decide that modern slavery should not exist. How to show your support this week? Participating in International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is a great way to show your support and raise your voice. There are many ways to get involved: 1. Educate Yourself. Pouring time and energy into learning more about the many forms modern slavery takes on is a great place to start. Our articles tab has years’ worth of blogs that are a great starting point. 2. Raise Awareness. Once you’ve set aside time to learn, share what you’re learning on social media or with friends and family. 3. Support Organisations. Contribute to or volunteer with organisations working to combat modern slavery and support survivors. You can volunteer with us at The Freedom Hub or donate to help victims recover in our Survivor School. 👉🏼Host Events. "When you are forced to do something you really don't want to do, and you still have to, it is not about obeying; it is about survival." In Episode 5 of My Epiphany Series, we met Mary, Senior Advocacy Advisor at International Justice Mission UK The girl, who hailed from SouthAsia, had been promised a better life, a job as a domestic worker. But when she arrived, everything changed. This girl’s story is not isolated. She represents thousands of girls who are trafficked, often by family members or trusted figures, lured by false promises of better jobs, only to be exploited in unimaginable ways. Mary reflected on the harsh reality: “She didn’t know where she was going, who she would be working for, or the horrors she would face.” HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED: Educate: Modern slavery is happening to people in the UK, in your town, in cities, on farms, and to people your age. Visit our website, follow us on social media, and educate yourself. Talk to your friends and family about it. Think before you buy a fake football shirt or pay for a cut-price manicure or a cheap car wash. Donate: Your money helps us to continue to develop awareness-raising campaigns and educational materials. It helps us to support grassroots organisations working directly with survivors and work with businesses to uncover and stamp out modern slavery in their supply chains. You can’t unsee that number: 92 women murdered in our country this year. Domestic violence is our national shame. This week, so many women have reached out to us—in fear, in grief, and in isolation. For every one of the 92, there are thousands more living in fear, unable to leave for countless reasons. We can’t wait for the government, police, or courts to be the solution. We are ALL the solution. Start today: • Have at least 9.2 conversations—whether it’s with friends, family, or on social media—about domestic violence. • Share this statistic. • Let people know you’re here for them. • Share resources - Sherele Moody; Dangerous Females; DVConnect; Women's Health and Equality Queensland ; Women's Legal Service Queensland • Donate to local, small unfunded services - Beyond DV Ltd, Dangerous Females, Peggy's Place, Baby Give Back • Do something - where you see, hear or sense domestic violence be a voice of support for those being harmed and an invitation to critically self-reflect for those doing the harm. Domestic violence is preventable, but only if we all step up as effective bystanders. Change starts with us. #bystanders #bethere #dfv #dv #92 #government

Where does domestic violence happen? In every neighborhood, in every community, and every demographic. Who has the power to help reduce domestic violence, create safer places for survivors, and in return help create a safer community as a whole? Every neighborhood, every community, every demographic. Support your local domestic violence program, like Iva's Place- a safe haven for women, men, and children fleeing the horrors of domestic violence.
Think domestic violence doesn't happen in your community? Think again. Domestic violence affects every neighborhood, every community, and every demographic. It's important to note that while these statistics are devastating numbers, only 59% of non-fatal domestic violence victimizations are reported 📈 By supporting local domestic violence programs, like Iva's Place, the community can contribute to the safety and well-being of both survivors and those who respond to these dangerous situations. 💜 By dispelling the myth that "this doesn't happen here," we can take steps to support survivors and create safer environments for everyone. 🤝 Understanding and acknowledging the prevalence of domestic violence in our communities is the first step towards addressing it and providing necessary and vital support to survivors. Human trafficking happens to Americans, by Americans. While many may associate human trafficking with international borders and foreign victims, the truth is that it happens domestically within the United States as well. Americans can fall victim to trafficking within their own country, whether through forced labor, sexual exploitation, or other forms of coercion. #HumanTraffickingAwareness #TechThatProtects #Nonprofit #HumanTrafficking
