Five-year-old Asha* displayed extraordinary bravery as she identified her attacker in court not once, but twice. Asha recounted her harrowing experience, using her words as a powerful catalyst for justice. Today, Asha is healing well, both physically and emotionally; she has finished her trauma-counselling sessions and is mainly able to enjoy a normal childhood. #BREAKING: Girl sees man sentenced to 17 years in prison for sexual assault in Uganda. Druscilla* was just six years old when she was abused by someone she trusted. Accompanied by an IJM lawyer, Druscilla – now 12 years old - was able to testify. She powerfully stated, “He destroyed my rights.” IJM became involved in October when the case was at risk of dismissal, despite the overwhelming evidence against the perpetrator. We helped police locate Druscilla and summon other witnesses to court. As a result, at the end of October 2024, the perpetrator pleaded guilty and was finally convicted. Long delays in court processes make justice harder to obtain. IJM is bringing together critical justice service actors to collaborate on each case, leading to trauma-informed care and faster progress of cases through the justice system.
