This morning I joined @marycalvitv on @cbsnews to talk about tech detox! Are you spending too much time glued to your phone? Do you find yourself scrolling as soon as you wake up, instead of focusing on important tasks? It takes about 15 minutes to enter a state of flow. However, constant distractions from our phones make it difficult to reach this state, and it can take another 15 minutes to regain focus once we're interrupted. Phone usage affects workplace dynamics, particularly during meetings. People often get sidetracked by notifications, emails, and messages, undermining their ability to actively listen and engage with others. Establishing boundaries and setting limits on phone usage is essential for a healthy tech detox. Try leaving your phone at home and taking a walk outdoors! Last Tuesday, more than 100 #WomenInSTEMM joined us from across the country to hear Dr Desiree Dickerson shed light on the nuances of productivity and the importance of directing our attention mindfully. It became clear amongst the virtual chatter that many of us feel stuck in the hustle, doing busy work that sucks the joy out of our day and zaps our energy. From resetting our mindset to riding the productivity wave, Desiree showed us new ways to think and act in order to get things done without compromising our wellbeing. Our FW community chimed in with some brilliant tips too 🙏 like time blocking inbox checks and tucking distracting apps away in folders. Desiree ended the webinar with a clear call to action - pick one thing to change and change it meaningfully. If I’m really honest, I hate the relationship I have with my phone. It takes more of my attention than I’d like to admit. And deep down, I know it impacts my relationships—stealing moments that should belong to those that matter most - including myself. That’s why I’m proud to be a techtimeout ambassador. TechTimeOut Tuesday on 3rd December is the UK's biggest workplace digital wellbeing day when thousands of businesses take part in some offline fun to raise awareness of the importance of digital wellbeing. It's a simple yet powerful reminder to step away from screens, even just for a little while. It’s about reclaiming your time, connecting with the people and passions that matter, and breaking free from the constant pull of notifications. This initiative isn’t about ditching technology altogether—after all, we know how vital it is to modern life. Instead, it’s about being intentional with how and when we use technology.
