The journey to managing obstructive sleep apnea doesn't end with the diagnosis or the initiation of treatment. For many patients, residual excessive daytime sleepiness remains a barrier to full recovery and optimal health, affecting their daily functioning and overall well-being. In this educational program, Dr. Christina Finch explores the latest research and treatment approaches for residual excessive daytime sleepiness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. She shares insights on the critical role of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale in monitoring treatment effectiveness and illustrates how to develop evidence-based treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs. Beyond addressing the mechanics of sleep apnea treatment, Dr, Finch dives into the nuances of patient communication, exploring strategies for establishing a dialogue with patients about their symptoms and treatment experiences in a way that fosters trust and compliance. Study links sleep apnea treatment and happier, healthier relationships Link: https://lnkd.in/edJmtDWQ A new study to be presented at the SLEEP 2024 annual meeting demonstrates that when individuals with obstructive sleep apnea use their positive airway pressure machine more regularly, it benefits their relationship with their partner. Results show that greater adherence to PAP therapy was associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction and lower levels of relationship conflict. Higher sleep efficiency among patients also was associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction as reported by both the patient and their partner. "Recognizing that sleep and sleep disorders have an impact on the quality of a relationship could be a powerful motivator for those affected with sleep apnea to adhere to treatment," said lead author Wendy Troxel, who is a senior behavioral scientist with RAND and licensed clinical psychologist and adjunct professor at the University of Utah, where the study was conducted. "We developed a couples-based treatment called 'We-PAP' in recognition of the fact that couples' sleep is a shared experience and to help patients and partners overcome challenges to adhering PAP together." #sleep #research #relationships #mentalhealth #sleephealth #sleepapnea #sleep2024 #sleeptrends #osa #health #healthcare #wePAP

Sleep Apnoea continues to underdiagnosed and over these years attempts have been made to develop simple tools like questionnaires(scales) to suspect sleep apnea. This new scale named GPSS developed by our group led by Dr Subash Heraganahally outperforms all the commonly used sleep apnea questionnaires like ESS, Berlin Questionnaire, OSA 50 score in the cohort studied. The scale is focussed at General physicians to enable them easily integrate it their practice with ease. This can potentially be used across the world specially in the developing regions # Darwin Private Respiratory & Sleep Health # Sleep Health Foundation # Gold Coast Lung and Sleep # SEAASM #Sleep Cure Solutions

Dr. Dan Gartenberg here, sharing my personal saga of tackling sleep apnea. Last time I posted on this, I was diving into my sleep apnea evaluation using this cool new device called Wesper. It lets you check your breathing health right from your home and connects you with an MD for a diagnosis. So, I went all in with Wesper.co, tracking my sleep over three days, and got my official diagnosis of mild to moderate sleep apnea from a connected MD. Armed with this diagnosis, I headed to my dentist and got the ball rolling with my insurance to cover a mandibular advancement device from Panthera. It’s like a mouth guard that pushes your lower jaw forward, which is backed by hundreds of studies for treating mild to moderate sleep apnea. Insurance only covered half since I have an EPO, but with a PPO, you'd get around 80-90% covered. It usually costs about $3k out of pocket… If you are a dentist, chiro, or sleep specialist, please reach out to me at dan@sleepspace.com about how you can incorporate this into your practice. After a couple of weeks, my dentist crafted my MAD device. It's super simple to put in and use, and once in place, it pushes my lower jaw forward, opening up my airway. The next step was crucial—ensuring this device was actually working. For severe cases, CPAP is usually the go-to, but there are other treatments like Inspire, or you can consult an ENT for more options. But since my case was mild to moderate, I opted to try the MAD first. I used Wesper again to validate the device's effectiveness. Initially, my moderate apnea showed an apnea-hypoxia index of 13.2 on the more conservative metric (3% oxygen desaturation) and 7.8 on the less conservative metric (4% oxygen desaturation). Ideally, you want fewer than five events per hour to avoid a sleep apnea diagnosis, but aiming for one or two per hour would be optimal for health. After retesting with the device, my apnea events dropped significantly. The more conservative metric showed 5.5 events per hour, and the less conservative metric showed just 2.1 events per hour. This improvement indicated that the device was effectively treating my sleep apnea. Looking ahead, I'm planning to incorporate weight loss into my treatment and then retest without the device to see the impact. Wesper’s affordability at $67 a month makes it accessible for ongoing sleep health monitoring. You don’t need to use it nightly—just periodically to keep tabs on your sleep health and make informed decisions. You can unlock this technology today with this special link that goes into details about my sleep journey: https://lnkd.in/ezMdqMTi That's it for my journey so far. I'll update you in another video, hopefully with more progress and insights. Have a great sleep! https://lnkd.in/eUW6zeDT Remember to consult a doctor for all medical questions!
