#COP29 has begun, and during this time, you may need to pause, step back from what's going on, and be kind to yourself. 💚 Joining a Climate Cafe is a way to spend time in a kind, non-judgemental space, and allow your emotions to surface, and be heard. During #COP29, we have extra PSC Climate Cafes running. The Climate Cafes for members of CANA and the climate movement are now FULLY BOOKED, but we are also co-hosting two more online cafes in this period, with CERI Climate Emotional Resilience Institute in the U.S. Christie Wilson from PSC and Eva Jahn from CERI will be co-facilitating these international cafes. November 15th (tomorrow!) at 10-11:30am AEDT/ November 14th at 4-5:30pm MST December 13th at 10-11:30am AEDT / December 12th at 4-5:30pm MST Register for the CERI cafes here, or pass on the link to anyone you know, who might benefit from attending: https://buff.ly/4foRFjH #COP29 #climatechange #climateaction #climatecafe #support #climateanxiety #climateemotions

With this year’s annual United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) summit coming up on 11 - 22 November, the world’s attention will be turning to climate change, resource security and the goals of sustainable development. PSC's purpose is to support people in facing the reality of the climate emergency. So we've partnered with Climate Action Network Australia to offer some special climate cafes in the lead up, and through #COP29 and its aftermath, for members of CANA or the wider climate movement. If this is you, and you will need extra support with the difficult emotions that can arise during all the media coverage of COP29, register now. The nature of our Climate Cafes requires capacity to be small and intimate, and some of these cafes are already half full. The International Day for Climate Action highlights the profound impact of climate change on our lives. Climate change poses significant risks to all sectors of the economy, with South Africa potentially facing a 5.03% reduction in GDP by 2050 (G20 Climate Risk Atlas). To mitigate these effects, South Africa must adopt low-carbon pathways. This can be achieved by implementing sustainable practices, advocating for climate-friendly policies, and prioritizing environmental conservation. At Rialto, we contribute to this crucial effort by offering and expanding our range of eco-friendly packaging solutions to the market. www.rialtofoods.co.za #g20climaterisks #dffe

As we head to the polls on July 4th, there's a glaring disconnect... Public concern for the environment is at an all-time high. The graph says it all (even if its a little out of date) But when I look at the party manifestos, there is a major gap. ❌ Sure, there are some nice pledges on nature-friendly farming and clean air. But will this help us reach net zero. The overall ambition just doesn't match the scale of the climate crisis. 🌍❌ This election isn't about green policies, and as a result the policies are watered down. edie has posted a great matrix digging into what the party manifestos say on climate change and the environment. https://lnkd.in/eMpmhAng #GE2024 #ClimateActionNow #VoteForTheEnvironment #CleanAirDay #CleanAir

With just a 0.5 degree increase from 1.5 to 2 degrees in temperature the worlds coral reefs are in danger of vanishing entirely. Half a billion people on this planet depend on coral reefs for food and coastal protection and 5,000,000 people die prematurely every year due to heat increases from climate change. Trócaire has been working on Climate Change across the world since 2008 by implementing Climate mitigation and adaptation projects in the countries that suffer the most from climate related droughts and floods, running hospitals and clinics in countries like Somalia for severely malnourished children and they have been advocating and challenging governments to take action. Happy World Environment Day, everyone! 🌍💚 Celebrated every June 5th, this day was established by the United Nations in 1972 to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our precious environment. 🌳🐾 Every year, we're given a chance to spotlight critical environmental issues, from fighting marine pollution 🐠🌊 to battling global warming 🌡️☀️ and promoting sustainable consumption 🛍️♻️. Today, let's all take part in environmental activities, whether it's joining a local clean-up campaign 🧹🗑️, planting a tree 🌱🌿, or participating in educational programs to learn more about environmental conservation 🦉📚. Remember, World Environment Day is a powerful reminder for us to use our planet's resources sustainably and responsibly. Let's continue to inspire each other to become active agents of change in preserving our environment. 🌎💪 #WorldEnvironmentDay #GoGreen #Sustainability #ClimateChange #EcoFriendly #SaveOurPlanet

Today’s Climate Conversation with the Men’s Shed, Tidy Towns, Active in Age, Heritage, Community Development Association groups in Oranmore, about what causes climate change, trends since they were born and what they can do, stirred great enthusiasm and discussions. I like to focus on the everyday actions, like making a cup of tea, having a shower, driving a car, heating the house and explaining how it contributes to climate change. Showing the steps in that link always brings out an “awe” moment, a recognition that now that I know how greenhouse gases (GHGs) are produced and its link to climate change, ”I” have control over my decisions, over my choices…daunting but true….. Another “awe” moment is usually when I show the trends in what we have learned to define as development since the 1950s and 60s, such as growth in GDP, tourism, transportation, water dams, foreign investment, etc and then show the corresponding cost to the earth system since the 1950s, such as: a steep rise in all 3 main GHGs, domestication of land, loss in biodiversity etc. This always starts a conversation about our beliefs on what is “development” and how “we” have contributed to this journey of development. However, changing habits is not easy and a good discussion emerged on that. While knowledge is not the only contributor to changing habits, however, knowing the clear link between their daily actions and climate change, gives responsibility to the individual (the householder) and a feeling that they can do something, and be a partner in the climate agenda together with others partners i.e the government, business and community. Engaging the over 60s has great potential for reducing GHGs at household level. This is no small act, given that consumption behaviour, at household level is responsible for 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions, (Dubois, G., et al 2019). I am in no doubt that these groups know and are taking their inter-generational responsibility very seriously. Equally, I am in no doubt they will continue the conversation with friends and family reflecting the aim of these conversations, which is to start a snowballing effect. Huge thanks to Oranmore Men’s Shed for coordinating the event together with and Galway County Council, Climate Action, Denise Feeney. Follow me, as I continue to have free “Climate Conversations” with 60+ groups, as one pathway to motivate them to reduce their greenhouse gases (i.e Carbon Footprint), to advocate for a more “prevention“ than “cure” approach, and to ponder on “our” intergenerational obligations. I plan to run three free 60+ Climate Work Out Program (2 hours a week over 6 weeks ) starting again in mid September, 2024,continuing ever 6 weeks until April 2025.

📑🖊️ New Op-Ed Food is the basis of life on earth. How we produce, process, and consume food must be at the core of actions to address the #ClimateCrisis, yet data shows public climate funding spent on sustainable food systems is declining. In this opinion piece, Lauren Baker and Rosinah Mbenya highlight the urgency to increase finance to fix food systems and the need for communities to directly access resources.
