Reaching the halfway point for my Directives for a Better Architecture Profession I’m reminded that these have been born of challenging the profession’s bad habits, their status quo bias and simply rethinking how architects might choose to rethink their work. I came up with 25 in all. They could probably do with a good edit. But I’m pleased they still hold up pretty well. They fall into 3 categories: 1. How to do meaningful work 2. How to better work 3. Low architectural fees aren't the cause of the practice challenges, they're a symptom of something deeper. After 25+ years in the profession, pondering its vagaries. I've identified at least one cause for concern. It's a trust deficit. Here's some ways to address it: → Share more openly about our processes and methodologies → Demonstrate value beyond just the final design → Document and communicate project successes consistently The most successful architects I know prioritise trust-building over fee discussions. Architecture and leadership are intrinsically linked. Both require a clear vision and planning, promote teamwork and creativity, and demand adaptability to change. Just as an architect transforms spaces, a leader impacts their community. Efficient resource management is key in both roles. So something came a little early today than I expected and I am excited to share the unboxing of seeing the hardcover book of The Lion Attitude. This truly turned out to be an outstanding looking hardcover book and I am in tears just watching the replay of this video. Our journey to reinvent leadership in the AEC field is all built on solving a problem that I want to spend the rest of my days on earth ending for good. 🦁 8.8 Trillion Dollars a Year due to Bad Leadership 🦁 180 Billion Dollars a Year due to Ineffective Leadership Development 🦁 Barely 10% effectiveness on all current leadership out there right now including all the books, people you see on LinkedIn, and anything else you can imagine under the sun. This means everything above is 90% ineffective, doesn't work, not applicable, or relevant taught by "outside consultants" with ZERO experience in the AEC industry. 🦁 72% of the Workforce with No Inner Leadership (Purpose) Looking at those stats it clear what we are doing right now is not working....so let's roll up our sleeves and actually solve this problem with Action + Connection together.... The first things I wanted to say is that I am grateful for all my friends, family, AEC colleagues over the years, TOP members, and my Lion Pride for walking with me on this journey to reinvent everything we have known about leadership from scratch. Here is the results of what happens due to having poor leadership right now. "Employee unhappiness in the workplace is not just a matter of morale—it has a staggering global economic impact, draining an estimated $8.8 trillion from the world's economy! Feb 26, 2024" 🦁 So let's put this in perspective that more money is wasted in the world than the US Federal Government spends EVERY YEAR based on the results of awful and bad leadership currently in place. Add it all up below: 🦁 72% of workforce doesn't have any Inner Leadership (Puprose) 🦁 Leadership development is only 10% effective even after all these "experts, coaches, and consultants" you see running around on LinkedIn and in the US. 🦁 We spend 200 Billion Dollars every Year per the Harvard Business Review and as a result of only being 10% effective WASTE 180 Billion Dollars EVERY YEAR on things for leadership that 90% of time don't even work. 🦁 The Federal Government is more effective spending money (1 Dollar in - 30 cents out) than we do teaching leadership to people resulting in all the waste and loss of money below. If you wanted to know what problem I am trying to solve with leadership just look at those numbers above. This is what keeps me up at night and why I will spend every day left I have on this earth so none of these things above and all this money wasted as a result of bad managers and ineffective leadership systems. So here is the problem all out in the open I want to solve and why I spent 5 years building a leadership system from nothing just to address those items above to change out world. There is a reason why The Lion Attitude was built exclusively for the AEC field. Lions are the ultimate hustlers that do anything possible to make things reality. AEC people are working in the trenches every single day to support every single industry that is talked about here on LinkedIn. Lions show the ultimate example of Purpose based on Intention + Motivation. AEC people are passionate about our field and keeping is a thriving place where we are the premier place to be. But how do Lions and AEC people perform at that type of apex predator level? They have strong Inner Leadership and know why they wake up each day to help be the backbone of our world. But what is the first step for an AEC professional to make the journey with Purpose Development. It all stems around 2 basic concepts in an math formula. 1.) Being intentional to work and develop your self within using a system and process. 2.) Being motivated on a daily basis to relentlessly work on building the Lion within. If you do those 2 things you can create Purpose as an AEC professional and even more important keep it going after building it. After all Lions have only been doing this for 10,000 years.....so it might be a little more effective than the 10% of current leadership development out there per the Harvard Business Review. What does it take to lead a top-level professional services organisation? What are the challenges of international expansion? What makes it work into the future? These were some of the questions put to Ross Donaldson, the former MD and Global Executive Chairman of Woods Bagot architects. Ross led a conversation for Band of Leaders Australia (BOLA) Prime members and guests entitled What Makes It Work?, at the group’s monthly meeting on Friday 19 July at Casa Nostra in Osborne Park. (Ross 2nd right with David Blythe-Wood, Arnold Stroobach, George Koutroulos.) BOLA is a peer membership group for business owners and chief executives. We seek to take our members beyond achievement to success—the essence of leadership. Inviting Guest Conversations is a key activity in our group meeting. From 2006 Ross was CEO and Chairman of Woods Bagot, Australia’s largest and only global architectural practice. Woods Bagot grew under Ross’s leadership, from a mid-size Australian practice to be the world’s 6th largest in 2015 and named equal 7th as the ‘most admired firm’, judged amongst its peers in a World Architecture survey in 2016. In an in-depth conversation Ross said that to lead a top level professional services organisation it had taken the recruitment of young, enthusiastic and fearless practitioners along with the introduction of knowledge-driven design. This concept was based on how any given space was to be used and was articulated, documented and published–becoming central to their practice, marketing and recruitment efforts. Knowing how buildings perform was their central concept, and this became very powerful for designers and clients alike. In the 9 years following 2006 Woods Bagot’s turnover increased 600% and their staffing from 300 to 800. A crucial part of this growth was the improvement in productivity by 240%.
