What does it take to lead a top-level professional services organisation? What are the challenges of international expansion? What makes it work into the future? These were some of the questions put to Ross Donaldson, the former MD and Global Executive Chairman of Woods Bagot architects. Ross led a conversation for Band of Leaders Australia (BOLA) Prime members and guests entitled What Makes It Work?, at the group’s monthly meeting on Friday 19 July at Casa Nostra in Osborne Park. (Ross 2nd right with David Blythe-Wood, Arnold Stroobach, George Koutroulos.) BOLA is a peer membership group for business owners and chief executives. We seek to take our members beyond achievement to success—the essence of leadership. Inviting Guest Conversations is a key activity in our group meeting. From 2006 Ross was CEO and Chairman of Woods Bagot, Australia’s largest and only global architectural practice. Woods Bagot grew under Ross’s leadership, from a mid-size Australian practice to be the world’s 6th largest in 2015 and named equal 7th as the ‘most admired firm’, judged amongst its peers in a World Architecture survey in 2016. In an in-depth conversation Ross said that to lead a top level professional services organisation it had taken the recruitment of young, enthusiastic and fearless practitioners along with the introduction of knowledge-driven design. This concept was based on how any given space was to be used and was articulated, documented and published–becoming central to their practice, marketing and recruitment efforts. Knowing how buildings perform was their central concept, and this became very powerful for designers and clients alike. In the 9 years following 2006 Woods Bagot’s turnover increased 600% and their staffing from 300 to 800. A crucial part of this growth was the improvement in productivity by 240%. This week, I had the chance to join an aspirant programme for future Chief Executives. Walking to the location of our event, you cannot miss the presence of the Shard as you pound the pavements around London Bridge. This building always interests me towering with other iconic buildings in London's skyline, but unlike some buildings - every picture and every angle I see of it is different. The Shard is multi-faceted, much like today's leader: ✨ It's bold - like the Shard’s design, great leadership means being unafraid to try something different and stand by your vision, and gain followers. ✨ It's strong and steady, and embodies a modern age - leadership isn’t always easy, but like the Shard’s solid foundations, staying grounded and resilient is the key in the face of emerging challenges. ✨ It celebrates uniqueness - in a city of tall buildings, the Shard owns its space. As leaders, we should embrace our individuality and bring that to the table, and surround ourselves with people that are different. ✨ It stands out - leadership is about making an impact and being heard, even in a crowded space. Would you add anything? Thank you to our aspirant programme delegates, to our guest speakers Trevor Holden, Pam Parkes, FCIPD Natasha Brown, and Nichola Mann (Assoc CIPD) from the PPMA - Public Services People Managers Association, to INNER CIRCLE CONSULTING for hosting and partnering this module, and of course to Penna for giving me the space to host, grow and learn. Architects: Do you have a firm culture built about safety? Not construction level safety. But safety to LEARN, make MISTAKES, and ASK QUESTIONS without fear. I great quote I heard from a firm owner at the AIA Women's Leadership Summit regarding this topic... She says to her staff, "You can make a mistake, I can fix it." 🧰 Showing that it is okay to make a mistake. She will be there to work with you to help fix it, learn from it, and teach others. That is a leader built around creating a safe space for others to learn with fear. Have you said that statement to your teams, junior staff, and new hires?❓ _____________________ Hello, 👋🏻 I'm Katelyn Rossier, AIA and this is mentorDINO! 🦖 I’m an Architect. I am tired of seeing professionals struggle, unprofitable firms, and training being sidelined. I’m here to change this culture. I help design teams acquire the technical skills, professional development, and resources they DESERVE to lead successful projects and step into leadership roles with confidence. Get ahead: Learn now, experience as you go!

The Value of Professional Designations Thank you to Long Island Business News for publishing an OpEd by CIBS Co-President David Pennetta SIOR, CIBS, LEED GA, on the importance of professional designations in building trust, credibility, and expertise in commercial real estate. David also highlights the CIBS Designation, which represents the "best of the best" in Long Island’s real estate industry and raises the bar for professionalism. Anyone interested in finding out more can log on to the CIBS website or contact CIBS member Eric Launer to register for next year's class at Eric.Launer@jll.com. “This isn’t just about adding letters after a name,” Pennetta explains. “It’s about ensuring clients and partners work with the most qualified professionals.” #ProfessionalDevelopment #CIBS #CommercialRealEstate #Leadership

So something came a little early today than I expected and I am excited to share the unboxing of seeing the hardcover book of The Lion Attitude. This truly turned out to be an outstanding looking hardcover book and I am in tears just watching the replay of this video. Our journey to reinvent leadership in the AEC field is all built on solving a problem that I want to spend the rest of my days on earth ending for good. 🦁 8.8 Trillion Dollars a Year due to Bad Leadership 🦁 180 Billion Dollars a Year due to Ineffective Leadership Development 🦁 Barely 10% effectiveness on all current leadership out there right now including all the books, people you see on LinkedIn, and anything else you can imagine under the sun. This means everything above is 90% ineffective, doesn't work, not applicable, or relevant taught by "outside consultants" with ZERO experience in the AEC industry. 🦁 72% of the Workforce with No Inner Leadership (Purpose) Looking at those stats it clear what we are doing right now is not working....so let's roll up our sleeves and actually solve this problem with Action + Connection together.... We can't afford to waste another 9 Trillion Dollars every year..... --- Roaring out to all the Lions & Lionesses! Rise up Lions and Fight for your Life! AEC - Architecture/Engineering/Construction Intention + Motivation + Purpose + Action + Connection = Triumph (I+M+P+A+C=T) #ActAndConnect #LionPride #LionAttitude Ring This to Follow My Post --> 🔔

There is a reason why The Lion Attitude was built exclusively for the AEC field. Lions are the ultimate hustlers that do anything possible to make things reality. AEC people are working in the trenches every single day to support every single industry that is talked about here on LinkedIn. Lions show the ultimate example of Purpose based on Intention + Motivation. AEC people are passionate about our field and keeping is a thriving place where we are the premier place to be. But how do Lions and AEC people perform at that type of apex predator level? They have strong Inner Leadership and know why they wake up each day to help be the backbone of our world. But what is the first step for an AEC professional to make the journey with Purpose Development. It all stems around 2 basic concepts in an math formula. 1.) Being intentional to work and develop your self within using a system and process. 2.) Being motivated on a daily basis to relentlessly work on building the Lion within. If you do those 2 things you can create Purpose as an AEC professional and even more important keep it going after building it. After all Lions have only been doing this for 10,000 years.....so it might be a little more effective than the 10% of current leadership development out there per the Harvard Business Review. Remember 72% of the workforce doesn't have any Purpose right now.....get into that 28% as an AEC professional and you can be unstoppable.....just like Lions have done for a long time on a daily basis.... --- 👋 Hi, I'm Kirby and my passion is reinventing leadership in the AEC field! It’s been 2 busy months since the South East Construction Expo & Awards! Joined by my dear friend and associate Roz Hobley on the stand, we met many wonderful business owners and leaders, and talked about their biggest people problems: 👉 engaging Gen Z 👉 retaining talent 👉 resilience and adapting to change 👉 team communication and collaboration being some of the ‘biggies’. We had a great response to our online survey about the biggest people problems in the construction industry, so if you responded, the white paper will be in your inboxes soon! I also gave away a 360 team performance assessment as part of the survey, and I’m delighted to be speaking to the winner to get to grips with their people problems. Whilst there, I was delighted to speak on a panel with Pippa Dennitts of Strength in People Ltd, hosted by Jarmila Yu, CMktr DipM FCIM FIDM MCIPR or YUnique Marketing Limited Marketing about Purpose, People and Profit. I was also delighted to see many of my Institute of Directors (IoD) Surrey colleagues including Jarmila, Ben Fielding and Richard Brooks, as well as fellow Association of Business Mentors (ABM) members Barbara Kovacs and Steve Paul. If you’d like a copy of the white paper, or you’d like to know how to solve your people problems, drop me a line. We can get some time in to have a brew. #SECE #LetsHaveABrew #Leadership #

Boundaries come in two forms: outwardly, in how we relate to others, and internally, in how we manage our own actions and needs. But let's be honest, implementing boundaries is tough, especially when it comes to ourselves. This question is part of an email series explaining the weekly leadership questions in the Architect’s Leadership Journal. Why I included it, and how you can think about it. I hone in on time and energy because they're finite resources crucial for our productivity and well-being. By safeguarding our time and energy, we can prioritise tasks effectively, boost productivity, and maintain our sanity. It's about finding that delicate balance between work, rest, and play.
