Even as leaders, we place great store in being active. We know it’s good to be seen at the coal face of the company, doing the heavy lifting. But there are serious shortcomings with this practice: When we have our head down, working, we don’t see what’s going on elsewhere. It leads us to believe that apparently passive activity (APA) has no value. As if it’s the opposite of productive. My former point is self-explanatory. We can solve that by confining ourselves to certain overt working tasks in frequency and duration–at probably half of our output. And use delegation for the remainder. My latter dot point probably needs some explanation. I would include as examples of APA as reading, resting, observing, sleeping (yes, different to resting), inquiring. I cultivate each of these because I know that each is productive. Reading is my favourite example of productive APA (that is, PAPA). So many people I know regard reading–fiction in particular–as a leisure activity, not something that we should be doing at work. Fiddlesticks. In a previous post, I made a case for 15 compelling reasons to read the novel. Here is a selection: It helps us to consider our own standpoints, and to plumb our own feelings, fears and aspirations and to accept other people’s experiences and points of view. This becomes tolerance. It empowers us to be storytellers. When fact seems too boring or too raw, the leader can devise a story that leads us to consider the fascinating and the inspirational. There are many attributes in life that can serve either as a tool, or a weapon. One of those attributes is perfectionism. Used as a tool, it can bring great personal satisfaction when it summons persistence, talent, mastery over some process, skills, materials or outcomes. This mastery may have taken tens or hundreds or thousands of repetitions of the required actions. It would doubtlessly have involved feedback from other parties, coaching and mentoring. There will have been a hefty price to pay in terms of time and attention. And here comes the paradox. When the pursuit of success becomes obsessive and the fear of failure is overwhelming. Used as a weapon—against others or against self—perfectionism means that nothing is ever good enough. And the implication is that the person performing whatever it is, or who fails to meet the given standard in any way, is themselves not good enough. This leads to self-loathing. It also isolates that person when they are unable to find perfection in others and then condemn themselves to the same lane of loathing—of everyone and everything. Their capacity for intimate relationships is comprised by their expectation that being accepted, admired or loved is dependent on their own perfect performance or appearance—check out the gallery on Instagram and TikTok. Setting standards in any facet of life is a common landing place for perfection. But while perfectionism is a worthy goal, it is not achievable. This is not so much a matter of fact, but of attitude. How we think about the matter. How we think creates our world. In her book, Dare to Lead, Brené Brown talks about the problems and pitfalls of perfectionism. She says that perfectionism is: A defensive move; not a striving for healthy achievement, growth and excellence. A shield—not of self-protection, but that prevents us being seen. Not self-improvement, but a dangerous and debilitating search for approval. Others-focused, seeking acceptancel: What will people think? Please. Perform. Prove. Not the key to success—hampering achievement and creating a fear of failure. Correlated with anxiety, depression, addiction, life paralysis or missed opportunities. Not a way to avoid shame, but a function of shame. Shame, Brown says, is the feeling that we are so flawed that we question whether we’re worthy of love, belonging and connection. We have an innate drive to be autonomous, self-determined and connected to one-another. When that drive is liberated, we achieve more and have richer lives. This is the foundation of self-determination theory (SDT), positing that psychological needs—autonomy, competence and relatedness—drive self-motivation. It runs parallel to work featured by Daniel Pink in his book Drive. Pink says that people are inspired to productively follow, if we as leaders provide: Purpose, which is about contributing to a cause that is greater and more enduring than ourselves. As the leader, it is our responsibility to devise and articulate both the logical and the emotional purpose of the business in such a way that people will be inspired to commit to it. Our framing of activities and goals aligned with this cause will give the ultimate satisfaction—people who understand the purpose of the business and how their individual roles contribute are more likely to be attracted to our business and ultimately be satisfied in their work. Autonomy, which is operating at arm’s length and having influence over: When—focusing on the result, allowing team members to have flexibility over when they complete tasks. How—allowing team members to tackle their projects as they see fit, versus following a rigid procedure. With whom—choosing with whom they work, which means forming and leading a cohesive work team. What—there will be the non-negotiables in leading a successful business, plus regular time to discuss, reflect and create. Each of these will be nuanced, according to how well members know their role and the business.
