Noramco™ Creates North American Pharma Supply Chain Services Provider Noramco Group Launched in Strategic Alignment of Noramco, Purisys and Halo Pharmaceutical, Inc. Noramco, a US producer of active #pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), has announced the launch of Noramco Group as an integrated North American-based API and drug product supply chain services provider. The strategic alignment includes subsidiaries Purisys, Noramco, and the newly acquired drug product CDMO, Halo Pharma. According to Noramco, it took this step to address the escalating #drug shortages in the US and quality concerns that are disrupting patient access. The current crisis, primarily driven by lack of reliable foreign supply, limited domestic manufacturing capacity for APIs and drug products, and logistical bottlenecks, has led to unprecedented challenges in ensuring the availability of essential medications. With the formation of the Noramco Group, the company said, it wants to improve supply chain performance and increasing domestic production in North America. The recent updates to China's State Secrets and Data Security laws could pose significant challenges for the pharmaceutical industry, particularly for companies reliant on Chinese suppliers. The broadening of these laws could potentially implicate routine practices such as audits and inspections, making compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice standards even more complex. A revealing article on top of RISFAX today, maybe some good thought material for Paul Simms in his endeavors to reinvent the pharma business model. A survey by Professor Katsunori Yamaura of Keio University's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences revealed that half of pharmaceutical companies prohibit Medical Sales Representatives (MRs) from providing information on unapproved or off-label pharmaceuticals. Of the 71 companies that responded, 32 companies, or nearly half, prohibited it. However, in February, Japan MHLW issued a new Q&A clarifying that unapproved and off-label information can be provided if requirements are met. Companies that previously prohibited the provision of information are now reviewing their internal standards, and it is likely that more companies will lift the ban on MRs handling it in the future. Companies with more MSLs are more likely to be prohibited from providing services by MRs. More than half of the respondents cited "there is no scientific or objective basis" as the reason for not providing off-label information. It is a good example showing that in some instances, while people complain about regulations and restrictions, it is often their own interpretation of the rules that should be revisited. My latest industry specific Supply Chain Matters blog perspective highlights a further implementation phase extension of the U.S. Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCA) announced last week. While this is yet another delay, there is evidence of progress being made in the B2B network implications, processes and technology enablement. However this remains another wake-up call to pharmaceutical and life sciences business and extended supply and distribution network teams to address fundamental business model challenges and associated processes.
