We are excited to be one of the government’s first heat network zones. Announced as one of six areas across the UK, we are pioneering new and innovative technology to deliver low-cost, low carbon energy using surplus heat from data centres – enough to heat and power over 10,000 new homes, businesses and a major hospital. We are in the final stages of procurement for a partner to help us develop this innovative new heat network and look forward to sharing exciting updates on this soon! The Old Oak and Park Royal Heat Network Zone will play a key role in the government’s plan to accelerate the delivery of heat networks across England, using our project to inform the work to reduce bills, enhance energy security, and achieve net zero by 2050. As one of the first heat network zones, we’re leading the way in developing low carbon infrastructure - supporting current and future generations of Londoners in Old Oak and Park Royal to live more sustainability. Businesses and building owners across parts of England are set to benefit from low-cost, low-carbon heating as six towns and cities have been selected to develop the country’s first heat network zones. Developing zones for heat networks in urban areas is the cheapest and most efficient way of delivering the technology, which recycles excess heat – generated, for example, by data centres or from factories – to enable the heating of several buildings at once. The Department for Energy Security & Net Zero has announced that the ground-breaking schemes in Leeds, Plymouth, Bristol, Stockport, Sheffield, and two in London will receive a share of £5.8 million of government funding to develop the zones, with construction expected to start from 2026. Update on heat network zones - six towns and cities to pilot clean heating.
This morning, Minister for Energy Consumers Miatta Fahnbulleh and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced the first pilot #HeatNetwork zones to be rolled out in six locations across England next year. The REA welcomes this important step towards the decarbonisation of #heat in the UK. Trevor Hutchings, our Chief Executive, said: "Today’s commitment to developing the first heat network zones in the UK marks a significant and welcome step in the journey to decarbonise heating. As demonstrated across many European countries, heat networks play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions, lowering consumer costs, and creating local jobs and skills. Importantly, these networks can capture low-carbon heat already produced by sources such as #biomass and #EnergyfromWaste facilities and harnessing other renewable technologies like #deepgeothermal heat and networked heat pumps. The REA looks forward to continued collaboration with the government to support the successful delivery of these transformative projects." https://lnkd.in/eP6NhfcF

Combined, space heating/cooling and water heating account for around half of the energy consumed in U.S. commercial buildings. Capturing and repurposing waste heat – a process known as heat recovery – represents a cost-effective approach for commercial and industrial buildings to significantly reduce their on-site energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Here's a look at how New York buildings are incorporating heat recovery systems to save energy and decarbonize. https://on.ny.gov/4fi9KAd

Latest on Showhome: High-quality fenestration critical for social housing energy efficiency targets At The Labour Party's recent conference, Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, outlined plans to decarbonise the social housing sector while reducing tenants’ energy bills. The proposal, currently under consultation, underscores the urgent need for improvements across a sector where 1.2 million homes currently hold EPC ratings of D or lower. “Most public housing stock was constructed between 1945 and 1980, a time when modern thermal performance standards were not a consideration,” said Martin Hitchin, CEO of REHAU UK - Window Solutions. “This poses significant challenges for councils and housing associations. However, upgrading windows and doors represents a key opportunity to boost thermal performance and support decarbonisation efforts.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eEbvcuRY #housebuilding #energyefficiency #windowsanddoors Jonathan Pittock

The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning, alongside the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, has outlined the next steps for the state’s Gas Substitution Roadmap. This follows the ban on gas connections for new residential developments and the requirement for all new government buildings to be all-electric. Victoria leads Australia in gas usage for heating, hot water, and cooking, with over 2 million homes and 60,000 commercial buildings connected to gas networks. The state government has now developed a Regulatory Impact Statement, presenting four pathways for electrification by 2026. Their preferred option focuses on: ✅ Electrifying all new and existing residential buildings (excluding gas cooking) ✅ Electrifying all new commercial buildings Gas appliances in existing commercial kitchens and existing residential cooktops are exempt, and allowances are made where electrification is impractical due to costs or space. The community and stakeholders can provide feedback on these options until 28 February 2025. An explainer on the forthcoming English ‘future homes standard’ from CBRE: The main features of this improvement to the residential building code will be no surprise to folks in MA: better envelope (building fabric is the term used in the UK) performance, triple pane windows, heat pumps required for space and water heating, energy recovery ventilation, lower air leakage rates. The items that are uncertain are when solar PV will be required and whether embodied carbon will be assessed. Changes scheduled to take effect in 2025. What about the rest of 🇬🇧? Scotland is going for stronger envelope regulations based on Passive house. As for Wales 🏴 and Northern Ireland, I would like to know more if you are tracking their progress.
What is the 2025 Future Homes Standard and how will it impact residential real estate?
