Giving Tuesday: https://lnkd.in/gAJMxsrH Labrador Friends of the South, Inc., (LFS) is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of homeless Labrador Retrievers in the Southeast region of the United States. LFS relies solely on donations, fundraising events, and adoption fees to continue saving and placing homeless Labradors. LFS is an all-volunteer organization that gives its time and effort out of a love for Labs. Our goal is to protect and save Labs from the perils of pet overpopulation and irresponsible pet ownership. Our ultimate goal is to help these dogs find new, loving, forever homes. The Labradors in our program receive veterinary care and temperament testing before being eligible for adoption. Since our goal is to place our Labradors in forever homes, we consider each Labrador’s history (if known), temperament, training, other skills, and energy level. We then assess each adopting family’s preferences, home environment, lifestyle, and personality to make the best possible match for successful adoption. Labrador Retrievers and Labrador Retriever mixes are the most popular family pets in the country. Unfortunately, this statistic means they are the most likely breed to end up in animal shelters as strays or unwanted pets. Perfectly healthy, sweet-tempered Labs are put to sleep every day, sometimes without the benefit of a painless euthanasia drug, simply because there are not enough good homes for them. We believe there is a misconception these Labs and Lab mixes have behavioral problems or extensive health issues that caused their owners’ rejection. The truth is most of these dogs suddenly find themselves abandoned by their owners and the only family and home they have ever known. This often happens because their owners lacked compassion or education about being good, responsible pet owners. Sometimes these homeless pets are victims of unfortunate circumstances or tragic events that caused them to become separated from loving families. Please open your heart and your home to a Lab that needs your help. They will show you their appreciation with lots of tail wags, body wiggles, and kisses. No matter the circumstances of their pasts, these homeless Labs are likely to bond thoroughly and deeply with their new families and make wonderfully affectionate and loyal companions for the rest of their lives.

Volunteers Week 2024 🫶🏼 This week is National Volunteers Week -time for us to celebrate the amazing contribution people make to the community. 🙌🏽 Volunteering was a gift to me after I moved abroad. It is something embedded in Western societies: it is made a lot more accessible and possible than it was in Hungary (maybe just life struggle was too draining, or I was too young and didn't care to do it? not sure). Either way, volunteering became a big part of my life since 2015. A few great experiences I had, just in case you need ideas: - Sundays in Durrell Zoo: I truly miss being surrounded by animals🐻, cleaning up their areas💩, food prep, or manning butterfly house 🦋 - Bat monitoring: I fell in love with bats big time while in Jersey, so recording their sounds and monitoring bats was a great experience 🦇 -Water testing in Citizen Science Program in Jersey: shocking but hugely important results... Let's not even mention water quality and sewage spillage going on in UK (disgrace)💩 - Sussex Wildlife Trust: I enjoy the HIT squad days clearing hedges, wood chopping, planting native wildflowers or litter picking🚯 - Brighton Permaculture Trust: orchard planting in hail and gale force wind wasn't on my list but I did enjoy it nevertheless! 🍎🌳 - Parkrun: the thing is I am NOT a runner, just tackling a beginners-course, but I either join as marshal (cheering) or tail-walker.🏃🏽♂️➡️ - I try and join lot of beach cleans organised by Leave No Trace, Marine Conservation Society, the Sussex Dolphin Project (their boat trips are fab by the way, if you haven't been yet!) 🐬 I know a lot of people who help other charities, support wonderful initiatives and are doing great things. Huge thank you to all of those who dedicate time and effort to volunteer!👏🏼 Share your volunteering experiences- maybe someone else is just looking for inspiration. Volunteering actually helped me hugely when I struggled with my mental health: so can highly recommend it as a remedy. It gives purpose, perspective, and it is a joyful focus time. 🫂 #volunteersweek #volunteering #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

What difference can you make on walks this weekend? Join 26,000 dog owners picking up a couple of pieces of litter on walks to protect animals, communities and our precious environment. It only takes a minute but makes a huge impact - 38 million pieces of litter every year, a few pieces at a time. The truly amazing thing is how great it feels to do something so simple that has an immediate and very visible difference. On #mentalhealthawareness week, why not give it a try and see.... #dogowners #walkingthedog #environmentalcharity #volunteering

Set up a cat house in your garden this winter 😻 #sharingisappreciated Cat houses in gardens or driveways are crucial for neglected and stray cats, especially during the cold winter months. When temperatures drop, these animals urgently need a safe and warm place to shelter. Many of these cats live on the streets and are vulnerable to harsh conditions. A cat house provides not only protection from cold and rain but also from predators and other dangers. Placing a cat house is a simple yet meaningful way to contribute to the well-being of these animals. With a few basic supplies, such as insulation and an entrance big enough for cats, anyone can create a safe haven. This ensures that the cats have a place to retreat, rest, and increase their chances of survival. Additionally, caring for stray cats can benefit the local community. By placing cat houses, people not only show compassion but also contribute to a better living environment for both the cats and the community. Every municipality should encourage this among residents and offer subsidies for citizens to do so. This rewards responsible citizenship and fosters community spirit between citizens and the city. Here’s another familiar face! Today we are spotlighting Harriet Simand as part of #VolunteerAppreciationWeek! Harriet is a retired teacher who loves gardening, travelling and dogs. 1. How long have you volunteered with Evergreen? This is my third year as a tour guide! 2. What inspired you to volunteer with Evergreen? I love the site, the nature and the historic buildings. I love feeling like I am in nature even though I am in the middle of the city. 3. Tell us about your roles and impact as a volunteer. I am a tour guide for public and private tours. I also volunteer for different festivals and the craft club. I love meeting the public and sharing the unique history of Evergreen Brick Works with them. I have been coming here for years and had no idea about its history! 4. What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Evergreen Brick Works? I love interacting with the public, especially kids, and spending time with my fellow tour guides who are so much fun to hang out with. 5. What’s the most important thing that you’ve learned from volunteering? Interacting with people in nature makes everyone happy. 6. Why do you think access to green public space is important? We live in a big city with lots of buildings and concrete. We often overlook the ravines and the plants and animals who live there. You can feel part of nature even if you live in a big city.

This photo is from a clinic in Mexico (2017) that was 6 or 7 days with 12-14 hour days (followed by laundry duty). And it was a rush! I headed the 2nd recovery unit as this is where the dogs "wake up" after surgery, (due to potential behavioral concerns when they wake). This followed the 1st recovery where they received a manicure and pedicure and new hair-do's (the "Spaw"). We had well over a thousand dogs go through, as well as hundreds of cats. Huge success! These offer a great opportunity to meet new people, get involved in the community, learn about the culture, work closely with animals, brush up on your Spanish (or language of the region), and be a part of a team. There is something for everyone and everyone is (or should be) appreciated. From drivers, to caterers, to those who carry the animals from one section to the other, pre-set up and post take-down, photographers, admins and organizers, those who work hands-on, and of course the vets and assistants. I met people who were there on their honeymoon and people from all over the world, and many are involved in rescue that I still keep in touch with today. And, of course, a few of the dogs made their way back to Canada ;-) I am certainly not an expert in these events, nor do I "work under one umbrella with one group". I constantly challenge myself by involving myself in different groups and events and orgs. No two clinics are the same, and there are many options. Having said that, there are groups you can join which means you see many of the same people at different events. Volunteering is a great way to broaden yourself, in addition to being a part of the solution (whoot whoot)! What is your favorite volunteering experience? Or have I peaked your interest?
