At Plan North Engineers, we’re continually working to enhance collaboration. Our founder, David Fulton, PE, MBA, shared his insights yesterday during an AIA panel discussion on fostering stronger partnerships between architects and consultants. David highlighted the importance of early collaboration, noting, “When structural engineers come in early, it’s a fantastic opportunity to align on expectations. However, it’s crucial that we have a clear understanding of deliverables from the start to avoid potential delays.” He also emphasized the need for alignment on design intent: “Understanding the architect’s vision is key. If we know what the goal is—whether it’s creating open spaces or integrating specific design elements—we can better support and enhance that vision, rather than just meeting the minimum requirements.” David added, “Having a clear reason behind design choices and sharing that vision with the team can help us all work together more effectively. It’s not just about being a participant; it’s about being a true partner in the design process.” This discussion reaffirms our commitment at Plan North to fostering strong, communicative relationships with our partners, ensuring that every project is a collaborative success! A special thank you to AIA Central Idaho for including us in this important discussion, and to Ian Hoffman from GHm Architects for moderating. It was a pleasure to share the stage with Cory Schrack (Civil) from Nasland Engineering, Emily Voges (Landscape Architect) from Stack Rock Group, Amy Dockter (Electrical) from CSHQA, and Laura Rankin (Mechanical) from Cushing Terrell. #PlanNorthEngineers #InterdisciplinaryCollaboration #StructuralEngineering #Architecture #Design #Teamwork

Architects are not fond of technology - is this controversial? Architects and designers are creative professionals - a creative brain is not really interested in tech minutiae. This is why most architects practices do not focus on the technology they use. That is absolutely fine because this is what we do. We get it - let us geek out on this stuff so you can get on with what you do best! Think of us as the equivalent of structural engineers facilitating your creative design process. https://lnkd.in/dZsepqpc #ArchitectureAndTech #DesignCommunity #ArchitecturalDesign #TechInArchitecture #CreativeProcess #ArchitecturalInnovation #CreativeProfessionals #Architects #DesignThinking #TechForDesign

☎ Do Architects Talk to Each Other? I’ve wondered this for a while. After spending much of my career around structural engineers, I noticed how easily they gather—socializing across firms, sharing design challenges, new code issues, or just catching up. It feels collaborative despite the competition. But with architects, it feels different. Is it just me, or is there less connection between architects? Maybe I’m expecting too much. Do other professionals meet up to talk shop after hours? I hope so! But I’ve noticed architects in my region rarely interact, at least not the way engineers do. When I point out an odd restroom layout to my non-architect friends, I usually get puzzled looks. But in a group of architects, everyone comes out saying, "Did you see that?" This disconnect is why I enjoy architecture conferences since they are an opportunity to meet like-minded professionals who are open to sharing ideas. Locally, however, it feels like competition keeps us apart. I’ve heard seasoned architects say it wasn’t always like this. They recall a time when collaboration and conversation were common. Today, everyone’s “too busy.” But we all make time for the things we value, don’t we? There’s a lot we could learn from one another if we stopped seeing each other as competition. I once tried to encourage emerging professionals to be more social, but I often heard the same excuse: lack of time. Still, I believe there’s potential to build a stronger community. One where we share experiences, help each other grow, and work toward a common goal of creating better spaces. Maybe it will take a new generation to bring this change, but I hope we don’t have to wait. Imagine what we could achieve if we started talking more NOW! Just some more of my Sunday Thoughts as I prepare to create dreams that you can walk through! #ArchitectsConnect #CollaborativeDesign #BuildingCommunity #ArchitectsUnite #DesignConversations #ArchitectureCulture #NetworkingInDesign #CollaborationOverCompetition #ArchitectsTalk #SharedExperiences #EmergingArchitects #DesignTogether
