About us

Cushing Terrell was founded in 1938 by architects Ralph Cushing and Everett Terrell. Ralph and Everett acted on the belief that integrating architecture, engineering, and design opened the doors for deepened relationships and enhanced creativity: that belief was the beginning of our design practice and still defines us today. Driven by empathy, our multidisciplinary teams work together to design systems and spaces that help people live their best lives, achieve their visions, and enjoy healthy, sustainable built environments. Each year, we complete projects translating into $1 billion in construction costs. These projects include schools, hospitals and clinics; single- and multi-family residences; and recreational, commercial, retail, and industrial developments. Our services include architecture; mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and environmental engineering; planning; landscape architecture; interior design; and many more. Hailing from 17 offices in seven states, our comprehensive approach and staff of 450+ professionals spanning 30 disciplines and seven markets enable Cushing Terrell to offer clients unrivaled partnerships, service, and value. With our passion to develop imaginative solutions and forever improve, this is where design meets you.

  • It's that time of year when we announce the team member who has been awarded our firm's highest honor — the Integrity and Client Service (ICS) Award. For 2024, the award goes to Cory Jassen in our Great Falls office! Cory is a mechanical engineer known for his expertise across nearly all markets in which Cushing Terrell provides design services. He’s particularly celebrated for his work on healthcare projects with clients that include Benefis Health System, Bozeman Health, Billings Clinic, Central Montana Medical Center, Glacier Eye Clinic, and Caribou Medical Center. “Presenting the ICS Award is one of the biggest highlights of my year, and I couldn’t have been happier to make the trip to Great Falls to surprise Cory Jassen,” said Greg Matthews, AIA, Cushing Terrell president and CEO. “Cory is one of those people who leads with quiet confidence and a steady demeanor. He's someone we all trust to handle any project, no matter the complexity. His expertise, sincere care for his clients and their needs, and his quality of work and problem-solving skills are second to none. Cory, congratulations for earning this prestigious recognition!” Learn more about Cory and read what his team members and clients wrote in support of his nomination for the ICS Award: https://hubs.li/Q030nw2L0 #ICSAward #ClientService #GreatFalls #TeamCushingTerrell #HealthcareDesign #EducationDesign #DesignExcellence

  • Last year, we began a new tradition with the publication of a company magazine, Design Meets You. The first issue celebrated our firm's 85th anniversary with a focus on adaptive reuse and historic preservation. This year, we took a deep dive into some of our favorite projects that create social connections — projects that bring people together for a variety of different activities that support healthy minds and bodies. In this issue, you’ll find: • a small community library making a big impact; • an industrial warehouse facility transformed into a world-class pickleball club; • the art of aquatic obstacle course design; • a university campus planned to take full advantage of learning inspired by the great outdoors; • and more! See what our teams have been up to via the stories behind the design: https://hubs.ly/Q030hj300 #DesignMeetsYou #TeamCushingTerrell #ADesignPublication

  • On the boards: Here's for all the people excited for snow and winter sports! Our team developed the conceptual design for a new headquarters and operations center for an adaptive recreation nonprofit, DREAM Adaptive Recreation. Founded in 1985, DREAM Adaptive provides year-round adaptive recreation opportunities that include fishing, skiing, and biking. They currently operate out of a small, impermanent structure, but with the generosity of the Lesar family and a planned capital campaign, the organization’s new facility is planned to greatly expand their ability to carry out their mission to make outdoor activities more accessible to all. The design concept features a three-story, 14,000 sq. ft. facility that can accommodate up to 10 wheelchair users at a time and includes an office, a kitchen, gathering space, day lockers, staff lockers and a breakroom, non-gendered accessible restrooms, two sensory rooms, a tech shop, and storage for summer and winter gear and equipment. Learn more about the project: https://hubs.li/Q02_xx_D0 Kudos to our visualization lead, Ross Hamand, for the lovely renderings, and here's to the talents of Eric Haffeman and Jessica Murray, NCIDQ, IIDA as the design leads for the project. #dreamadaptiverecreation #whitefishmountainresort #bigmountainmontana #adaptiverecreation #ontheboards #mountainrecreation

  • Key to how we do business is our mission to forever improve. And this relates directly to our work to continuously gain knowledge and expertise in the realm of sustainable design and decarbonization services and be part of the effort to create a better built environment. One of the steps we recently took was signing the MEP 2040 Commitment and joining the movement led by the Carbon Leadership Forum, which calls for systems engineers and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) firms to achieve net zero carbon in their projects by 2040. "As a multidisciplinary design firm with experts across the design spectrum — architecture, engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, and planning — we understand we’re tasked with the creation of the built environment of tomorrow," said Greg Matthews, AIA, president and CEO of Cushing Terrell. "As such, we must encourage each other, our clients, manufacturers, and construction partners to collectively utilize our knowledge and creativity to realize a healthy and thriving future." • Featured in Western Art & Architecture, the design of this contemporary mountain lodge began as a sketch on a napkin and resulted in an expansive, light-filled home. Taking full advantage of it's elevated site, the home was designed to be open to and capture the surrounding tree- and mountain-filled vistas of Deer Lodge, Montana. A hallway, punctuated by stone arches and featuring artwork collected by the homeowners, is a distinctive feature of the home. "The hall and archways anchor and organize the home," said Jesse Vigil, AIA, NCARB, the lead architect for the project. It connects the rooms to either side, each with its own vista of the outdoors. We posted earlier about G5 Brewing Company being named a finalist in the Restaurants/Bars category of Midwest Home magazine's Design Awards, and we're super proud to say that the project took top honors with a first place award for the category. Our G5 Brewing Company client brought us their vision to create a legacy project that celebrates their family and the places they call home. Melding aspects of Montana and the Midwest, the design balances local vernacular, contemporary details, and western materials to create a timeless brewery and restaurant. The building’s primary areas represent the five members of the family and are organized around a central beer garden with views into the brewing operations — the heart of the project. This is one that brought together the expertise of our team in retail, residential, and hospitality design to create the desired functionality and feel. What better project to be celebrated as part of the Midwest Home Design Awards than a brewery that makes you feel right at home? Congrats to G5 and Cushing Terrell design team members Charlie Deese, Shawn Pauly, and Sarah Shearer, AIA, NCARB! There to accept the award were team members from our Minneapolis office, Melissa Bjornson and Nicholas Holzer. #DesignAwards #BreweryDesign #HospitalityDesign #ResidentialDesign #MidwestDesign

Cushing Terrell Billings office donates Thanksgiving boxes to families at Newman Elementary each year. Newman has been our Billings Public Schools 'Partner in Education' for 28 years and this is one of our absolute favorite ways to give back. We assembled a record (35) Thanksgiving boxes for these kiddos and their families this morning. Each box contains a turkey with all the trimmings, vegetables, milk, eggs, butter, rolls, and even a pumpkin pie with whipped cream for dessert. We had quite the volunteer turnout in our plot room and packed two pickup beds (Thanks Nicholas Bowers and Sean Tharp). 🦃 Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 #cushingterrell #partnersineducation #billingspublicschools #thankful

New in our portfolio: The Town & Country Markets Mill Creek location was renovated with a focus on the store’s food service areas and the goal of creating elevated food offerings and a restaurant dining experience within a grocery setting. To achieve this goal, one of the key moves was to open up and connect the indoor and outdoor seating areas with sliding panels and glazing, bringing in air and light, and creating a welcoming ambience. Materials and colors were thoughtfully selected to create a dynamic and casual vibe for the new restaurant space. Updates to the millwork, décor, and finishes highlight a color palette that ties together the entire store and reflects the Town & Country Markets brand colors. Earth tones with pops of green also echo wooded Pacific Northwest settings.
