How can farmers find long-term solutions for soil health?   Project Fortress is a multi-year project conducted to investigate how we can restore the soil at The Grange Farm by increasing soil carbon sequestration and storage in the field. The Cool Soil Initiative started with a "what if we could..." conversation years ago. It has since grown into one of the largest projects of its kind in Australia -- proving that any idea can germinate if the conditions are right. And in CSI, corporate partners and Charles Sturt University are supporting farmers to maximize their soil and yield potential in every way they can. Farmers are taking the lead in preserving our soils! In recent years, they have transitioned to low-till or no-till cultivation practices. This means that instead of using diesel-drinking ploughs, they are using fuel-sipping 'direct drills'. These efforts are crucial to relieve pressure on our soils. The Government has introduced new measures to limit the amount of land farmers can take out of productive actions under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), as they try and ensure a balance between land use for food production and environmental goods.
