On the 11th day of #GoGive, we’re celebrating the impact of grant funding on our local communities 💸🧑🤝🧑 Last week some of the causes in the Neighbourly network got an early Christmas present when they received funding from the Pret Foundation’s Community Grant programme, with the total financial donations from all partners during our GoGive campaign now reaching over £300,000. The Pret Foundation is passionate about supporting people to access the resources and opportunities that they need to break the cycle of homelessness and lead healthy lives. 💙 AR Projects CIC told us they’d be using the grant to run their Pathway to Employment programme, supporting individuals with training materials, job placement support and alumni events. 💙 The SPACE will be using their funding to help train people in their area facing homelessness, including a weekly hub to increase individuals’ employability and equip them with the skills and experience to apply for jobs. #GoGive #GoGiveCommunity #LocalSupport

Roots & Wings is an incredible non-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth aging out of foster care. The statistics speak for themselves: - More than 1 in 5 will become homeless within 18 months of emancipating. - Almost 50% of inmates in our prison systems have spent time in the foster care system. - Only half of aged-out foster youth obtain their GED or High School diploma by age 19. - Just 6% go on to earn a 2- or 4-year degree. In 2023, Roots & Wings members defied the odds: - 100% have a High School diploma. - 94% were employed. - 88% maintained a savings account. - 81% attended an educational, vocational, or certificate program. Join us at the Gala on October 17th, a crucial event that supports Roots & Wings in their mission. Your participation or donation can make a real difference. Earlier this year we launched Community Connect, our new scheme which grants everyone at Reed in Partnership three days each year to volunteer within their local community. Maria Chappell, Employment Adviser on our Work Routes service, used her Community Connect days to volunteer for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) Charity. The organisation supports local ambulance services through training volunteers and funding community education initiatives. Maria has been volunteering with YAS as a Community First Responder since 2015, so was delighted to get the chance to give more of her time to the service. Community First Responders are vital across Yorkshire as they enable more people to respond to a medical emergency. Working in local communities, volunteers are trained to provide lifesaving treatment in those critical few minutes between an incident and the ambulance arriving. Maria shared her experience stating, “My Community Connect days were spent assisting the crew on shift and visiting a local secondary school to demonstrate the importance of the Restart a Heart initiative which encourages people to learn CPR. “I am very passionate about the role I do and want to make a real difference, so this was the perfect opportunity. This is a very important time of year for the service, and being closer to the patients allows myself to offer vital support at the scene. “𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲.” #community #volunteering #socialimpact

Today is #GivingTuesday, a day for us to come together and empower the communities that mean the most to us. 💖 With incredibly pressing issues such as food insecurity, personal safety, and lack of representation, we are fortunate to have some strong supports in our community of South Etobicoke. This GivingTuesday, we'd like to highlight three of these amazing non-profit organizations! For more details, check out our previous three posts. @foundationforstudentsuccess addresses issues of poverty, hunger and poor nutrition for students across Toronto by removing barriers to their education. In particular, their Beyond 3:30 program gives children between the ages of 8 and 14 a safe and welcoming place for sports and physical fitness, a nutritious meal, and homework support each school day — opportunities that are out of reach for most families facing poverty issues. @indigenousfriendsassociation supports Indigenous communities across Canada through free digital literacy, education, and career-building programs, which utilize the Indigenous ways of knowing. Their programs like IndigiTAL and IndigiTECH continue to bridge the gap in educational and employment opportunities for Indigenous communities by offering hands-on learning, mentorship, and pathways to promising careers in the tech industry. @womenshabitat of Etobicoke provides vital support to self-identified women and their dependents who are survivors of violence and poverty. Their emergency shelter and outreach center provides essential services for individuals fleeing violence such as group and individual counselling, parenting support and housing assistance. Women’s Habitat is committed to identifying barriers to women’s equality and advocating for change. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a big impact. Definitely check out the organizations above, and if you have any charities you'd like to shout out, feel free to share them in the comments! #givingtuesday

Nowadays, technology impacts everything, even foster care! CarePortal connects charities with families in need, like Uber connects drivers with people who need a ride, and has helped more than 250,000 children in the past decade. “In crisis, those touched by the child-welfare system could connect with churches and people who care in proximity that would want to help if they knew. What would happen if you could expose people to the reality that a bed or crib or car seat, or paying a bill, things that were small, like 6-inch barriers, would actually make a difference to keep kids out of foster care and reunify biological families?” Learn more about this wonderful platform at https://bit.ly/49vj2oV #ChildWelfare #FosterYouth

How would you future-proof Special Needs Jungle Ltd? I started the SNJ website 16 years ago, after I got statements of SEN for my autistic/ADHD children. I realised other parents, some of whose children had profound disabilities, were being refused help so, being a journalist (a successful career in broadcast news I had to abandon), I wrote about how I'd approached it. I then started to write about other helpful resources I'd seen, then onto the SEN Green Paper in 2011. I've been joined over the years by an evolving team of volunteer parents & practitioners to document (and participate in) the creation of the Children & Families Act 2014. We've detailed the endless traumas its poor implementation wreaked on families across the country; it's like a history of SEND politics since 2008. We became a non-profit (a CLG, not a charity) in 2014 and I now have three other amazing volunteer co-directors with whom I make decisions jointly—I prefer to collaborate, not dictate. I don't tend to push myself forward on here much because the randomness of Ehlers Danlos syndrome means I rarely have energy to do so— this has also impacted growing SNJ's income and my own external earning potential. It's a massive frustration as I've developed a huge range of skills from building & maintaining a website, writing, commissioning & editing content, growing our social media, creating digital artwork, public speaking and, of course, being a national strategic advocate for SEND. (I also run a tiny social media consultancy.) Recently we've been asking where do we go from here? SNJ has well over 1600 posts & pages. We're self-supporting from donations and a small amount of paid ads. But SEND is still a disaster zone. I'm told we make a difference, but it often seems a futile battle holding the feet of those in power to the fire. Now yet more reforms loom, but these too will fail if SEND is still seen as "separate" rather than integral to a successful education system. Using mainstream units & resourced provision (see today's SNJ post) is not the inclusion Labour says it wants. And how long can SNJ keep going on a shoestring? How long can we rely on the goodwill of our wonderfully cynical team of volunteers whose analysis and expertise are unmatched in SEND. We'd love to be paid for our work. I'd love to be able to take on more paid external advisory work (there often seems to be an expectation that we'll offer our time for free for speaking invitations etc—this is not the case!) My kids, whose needs kicked off SNJ are now adults well into their 20s, and I'm a Grandma of 2 (probably neurodivergent) little boys. How do we future-proof SNJ to preserve its legacy and impact, and so I can eventually step away and it can continue? Ideas welcome! And if you want to help us out by making a small donation, we'd be really grateful! Sharon Louise Smith Renata Watts FRSA Gillian Doherty

👏 Relationships are essential.👏 Tangible things - backpacks, shoes, Christmas presents - those are important, but relationships for kids and caregivers in the foster care community are essential. 💫 A well-supported foster home means they don't get overwhelmed as easily and that their home stays open longer. If caregivers keep their homes open to kids in need, kids on the Olympic Peninsula stay IN THEIR COMMUNITY. Relationships mean kids in care feel seen, important, and loved. They learn to trust and regulate themselves. Relationships - volunteers who give their time, heart, and connections to the foster care community - are how we change the way foster care is experienced. Can you give your time to make life better for the foster care community and change outcomes for generations to come? If you don't have capacity, can you donate? Get involved today - anyone can make life better for a child in care: olympicangels.org #foster #fostercare #relationships #trama #TBRI #traumainformed #volunteer #mentor #lovebox #daretodream #relationalpermanency #relationalpermanence #stability #consistency #donate #nonprofit #community #fostercarecommunity #fostercarenonprofit #olympicangels #nationalangels #olympicpeninsula #selfregulation #regulation #coregulation #trust
