The advent of programmable money in the form of digital assets and smart contracts has created a profound opportunity for the #tokenised economy, but accessing this potential today is difficult, expensive and thwart with friction. It's my firm conviction that programmable banking will become the principle means by which institutions will access #DApps and smart contracts on the #blockchain, directly through their programmable bank accounts. How this hot coral card changed everything🤯 Launching in 2015 (when I was 10 🥳), Monzo Bank jumped into a gap which was ripe for DISRUPTION 🧨 People were getting fed up with banks…. Trust was at an all-time low at only 37% Problem? Banks hadn’t kept up with the digital age… clunky apps with limited functionality, customisation and poor customer service How did the Monzo team do it? That coral card speaks for itself… A conversation starter. Intrigue = envy. Waiting lists, hype.. the lot. Real focus on UX too. 🪸🪸 Early adopters of the community culture. In-person meet ups. Online forums. Approachable tone of voice. Word of mouth referrals were the real winner here 🏆 The team have relentlessly scaled up and have hit over 9 million users… 🚀 Anyone else see PerfectTed as the Monzo Bank of the drinks industry?? Day fuck knows... of dealing with Monzo Bank Their 2 -4 weeks to give me my money back expired yesterday. When asked basic questions, I got vague upon more vague answers. Top hits include - Im pausing this conversation as it's going around in circles. (This is when I challenge their copy paste KBA responses) - No one can speed up the return of your money The CEO's executive complaints team answers are just as bad. - Your complaints handler is away - We don't know when she is back. Monzo Bank must think i'm going to roll on the floor and roll over. Wrong. These fuckers need dealing with and the bullshit they are operating under, is such a faceless environment & their attitude is "tough shit" deal with it. More fun to follow tomorrow.

🍑 Money never felt so Monzo 🍑 Monzo Bank launched its first above-the-line campaign in five years and I LOVE it. Why?... It shifts a traditionally left-brain, rational thinking sector into the right-brained realm of intangible 'feelings'. It's rare to see a banking brand equate financial decision-making with emotions, but Monzo does it exceptionally well. 💡 INSIGHT: Money management doesn't make people feel good. The campaign highlights the pain points, stress, tedium, and friction commonly associated with money management, positioning Monzo as the solution—effortless, exciting, and positive. The ad features a series of beautifully shot vignettes juxtaposing love and hate, anger to warmth, to the terrifying and enjoyable. (TV ad in the comments)

Props to Monzo Bank! 👏 This is Monzo’s first above-the-line campaign in five years and it delivers. Everyone talks about money, but we never talk about how money makes us feel. Monzo have flipped the switch on traditional Banking adverts (there are no horses galloping on the beach!) and has produced a dramatic, fast-paced film to show all the negative stresses, and the positive rewards, that money brings. How Monzo Bank turned banking hot coral… 🔥 The go-to-market story of one of the UK’s top challenger banks was aimed at doing one thing. Turning customers ➡️ brand advocates. The first step? 💳 Generate buzz within existing networks. Monzo kickstarted word-of-mouth referrals by distributing pre-paid cards to influencers and enthusiasts, leveraging their strong offering. Add referrals to build a community 🗣️ When users downloaded the app, they were added to a waiting list. The only way to move up the queue was to refer friends, adding fuel to their word-of-mouth strategy. Keep the buzz going once they're customers 🔑 Monzo then distributed “gold tickets” (inspired by Willy Wonka) to customers, allowing them to invite friends to skip the waitlist and gain instant access to Monzo. Today, around 80% of Monzo’s customer acquisitions come from their referral program, with the remainder driven by paid media. 💸 AJ Coyne recently said on the Uncensored CMO - Monzo customers are true advocates, being seven times more likely to use the word "love" when talking about Monzo compared to any other bank. #growthmarketing #fintech #brand

For my international colleagues curious about how Monzo Bank has deployed their latest price plan offering to customers, I've made you a screenshot walkthrough. I was an existing premium Monzo customer so the experience that I've been able to record is the upgrade path one - but it will give you a good idea of how one of the best teams in the business has deployed their top tier price plan for customers. Some points to note: ➡ See how they compress normally complex, detailed terms & conditions into easy-to-understand sentences. ➡ As I'm upgrading, they've prepared a clear set of outlines showing what I am getting (new) and what I will be losing - note the way they've used colour (black vs green) to clearly signal to the customer. ➡ They've worked hard to drive a compelling buying experience on the handset - I really did feel 'valued' as I walked through the process. ➡ The buying bit was seamless too, as you might expect for a neobank. Tap, tap. Paid. ➡ There's a bit more detail on how the Greggs treat works too! ➡ Right at the end of the experience, I then got an email summarising it all. Very smart, very connected.

Monzo Bank feels like this does it? Not if you have a problem. I have spent over 2 weeks in a kafkaesque online chat nightmare trying to sort out what appears to be a simple case of fraud/account cloning. Over 100 messages back and forth with 15 different people (who often change mid conversation) who constantly tell me its being passed on to an expert. I fear it is another example of a disruptive brand getting a vital part of those vital 4Ps wrong. As a marketer I can't fault price or place and give the promotion top marks (ads ✅ distincitve brand assets ✅ ). But they need to remember the product is more than funky pink cards, it is a service. And as a customer I give that a total utter fail.
