I recently took my first Qantas flights in many years. Whether its a "millennialism" or not, as someone who has been highly fortunate to have enjoyed many flights in my life I have never found myself drawn too or in anyway loyal to a single aviation brand. Firstly, I must say that the Qantas experience was indeed great and arguably the most comfortable flying experiences I have had for quite some time. One thing that did strike me though was the product offering for in-flight. Cue your Seinfeld music with a vintage 90's joke about plane food. In complete opposition to the cliche, the offering felt of such a higher quality than that of its competitors. There seemed to be a real focus on the customer experience as well as the story behind the products being served. Then came the drinks menu though.... Now in all honesty if you had told me 10 years ago that I could get an ice cold can of Stone and Wood Pacific Ale on a flight I would have been stoked. But in 2024, this feels like a failure of opportunity. Don't get me wrong, Pacific Ale is awesome. I have no ill will towards the beer and its a huge leap from the days of draughts and bitters on planes. My issue though? Why is our national carrier and the very symbol of Australia through the skies advertising foreign owned beer? Yes, beer is my job. But beer is also the everyone person drink and let's face it the fuel of many airport layovers globally. Why then is one of Australia's most important companies who are putting so much effort into artisan domestically owned food companies being showcased on their flights, skipping over this crucial element of air travel? There are over 600 independent breweries in Australia. Owned, operated and giving back to this country. Where is their look in? Apologies for an off brand rant but it seems so sad to me, that a company like Qantas who have so much opportunity to give back to this country and its producers simply skip over certain areas for convenience. I know its small and niche but these are the things that I genuinely believe would incentivise me and my dollars long term to have a preferred carrier going forward. And hey if this find its way to the beer buyer for Qantas I would be more than happy to connect you to the Independent Brewers Association for a call out to submit products for ranging!

We reveal the world’s top 20 travel retailers, measured by their 2023 sales, in the latest edition of The Moodie Davitt Magazine. I have shared the top ten in the image below; you can discover the remainder of the top 20, along with extensive accompanying commentaries on the listed companies, via this link: https://lnkd.in/dEnf86Dm In a big change at the top of the rankings, travel experience player Avolta returns to the number one position it held from 2014 until 2019, based on full-year turnover. China Duty Free Group, Lagardère Travel Retail, Lotte Duty Free and DFS Group complete the top five list of travel retailers. To reflect the importance of the food & beverage channel, for this first time we feature a separate travel F&B ranking, which is also led by Avolta based on 2023 sales in that channel. In the magazine, you will find a combined retail and F&B list, also for the first time. #travelretail #airports #foodandbeverage

Unpacking the Beverage Industry: Do pouring rights hurt the passenger experience? Another misconception about pouring rights is that they can can detract from the passenger experience at airports. These agreements can actually enrich the passenger experience by providing a diverse selection of beverage options and launching engaging marketing activations. Access to popular brands boosts passenger satisfaction and enhances the overall atmosphere. Beverage companies often create unique airport experiences, such as celebrity appearances, autograph signings, giveaways, and local promotions. They also incorporate local landmarks into their merchandising, enhancing the sense of place and making each visit unforgettable. S for Smile or S for Sick? The recent airline news in #india was all about Air India Express cabin crew calling in sick! Remember the similar "sick"ness situation at Vistara with pilots a few months ago? I would say #airindia has a Pepsi versus Coke challenge. It's actually more like a jigsaw puzzle than which one is "sweeter" Vistara integrating into Air India - cultural & brand issues! Air India Express & Air Asia - which have already integrated, are now facing "similar" issues! The reason I would call this a Pepsi versus Coke problem, 📌 If both of them merged, the brand would remain Coke, definitely (Same with Air India & Vistara) 📌 While they sell sugar filled fizzy drinks, their culture is very very different. (similar maybe to Air Asia India & Air India Express or maybe Air India & Vistara as well) 📌 Just also imagine what would happen if you try and combine Pepsi and Coke into one product - and it was called "COKSI" hmmmmmm...... would die-hard Coke or Pepsi fans like that? I doubt! Would the new Pepsi & Coke product make you "S"mile or "S"ick? Which one is "S"weeter? Let's try out COKSI, my friends! 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐞, "𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 - 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 & 𝐁𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬!" 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥 "𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬" 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐦 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐬! #aviation #travel

Lufthansa's New "Last Minute Food" Service Takes Off! In a groundbreaking initiative, Lufthansa has announced the introduction of "last minute food" on their flights. Here's how it's changing the game: - Sustainability in the Skies: By offering meals at a discounted rate right before landing, Lufthansa not only reduces food waste but also promotes sustainability. - Cost-Effective Dining: Travelers can now enjoy quality meals at lower prices, making in-flight dining more accessible. - A New Travel Trend: This move redefines the 'last minute' concept, now extending to what we eat at 30,000 feet. Lufthansa's initiative is a prime example of how businesses can innovate to benefit both the environment and their customers. It's not just about the journey; it's about making every aspect of travel more sustainable and enjoyable. When I met iCoupon CEO Richard Bye (pictured) at The Moodie Davitt Report’s Airport Food & Beverage + Hospitality Conference in Thailand last September, I knew almost instantly he would make a great interviewee. Last month, I sat down with the serial entrepreneur for an extended conversation which produced one of my best stories of recent years. For the uninitiated, iCoupon is delivering incremental travel retail revenue streams using its innovative digital vouchering platform to a global network that now extends to 250+ airports with more than 160 airlines clients and 200 retailers across more than 2,500 retail/F&B units. That base is growing exponentially and without a direct competitor in sight. Already working with many of the world’s most famous airlines and the big four in travel F&B (Avolta, SSP, Lagardère Travel Retail and Areas), iCoupon is shortly to announce a major venture into duty free. Here are some highlight quotes from Bye’s interview: “The way we are building our suite of solutions, a new airport doesn’t just result in one new revenue line, it might result in 50 new revenue lines, because of the new retailers and the new airlines that we can activate there.” “We have somebody in the business who is responsible for innovation, and that includes taking everyone’s crazy ideas – the retailers’, the airlines’ and iCoupon’s – and deciding what we’re going to do next.” “If you don’t have the confidence and open-mindedness to work with partners and take the strengths of other organisations and have a network and a platform where you can integrate those strengths, you won’t succeed.” That is just a small taster of the wide-ranging subjects we discussed, as Bye recounts the iCoupon story and gave insights into the reasons behind its accelerating growth across the airport world.
