What is Focus? Focus skills are the essential skills that students need to master in order to learn and progress academically. They are the building blocks of learning! Focus is an Exeutive Function ability that is composed of three separate, but closely related skills: task initiation, sustained attention, and task persistence. Focus involves knowing what to pay attention to in different situations, learning how to get started on tasks, and understanding how to sustain attention and effort to the task at hand. Focus helps students get started on something and sustain his attention and effort through its completion. Focus is very important for many academic tasks. Students need to be able to use Focus when reading in order to pick out main ideas and fully comprehend the parts of a story. Focus is also important when working in a science lab in order to maintain safety. Students need to focus when taking notes and outlining ideas for a written assignment as well. Focus skills are necessary for success in any classroom. What's the Difference Between Formative and Summative Assessment? Formative Assessment Goal: To monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback for improvement. Benefits: It helps students identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas needing work. Enables instructors to pinpoint and address challenges immediately. Low stakes (little or no point value). Examples: 1. Creating a concept map to illustrate topic understanding. 2. Submitting a sentence summarizing the main point of a lecture. 3. Turning in a draft research proposal for early feedback. Summative Assessment Goal: To evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit against a benchmark. Characteristics: High stakes (significant point value). Measures overall achievement. Examples: 1. Midterm exams. 2. Final projects. 3. Research papers or recitals.
