As I was researching a healthcare topic, a small data point caught my eye. It is a microcosm of the entire rot in our healthcare system. 42 states and territories use a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC). This agreement allows nurses who live in and are licensed in one of the Compact states to practice in any of the other Compact states (after they have applied for the appropriate license). With our severe nurse shortage, this is a small and eminently sensible thing. It helps nurses, patients, facilities, and payers. Only someone bent on hurting patients who need nursing services—typically the elderly or those with severe, chronic illnesses—would oppose it. Well, here are the states and territories that do now allow the Nursing Licensure Compact: Alaska California District of Columbia Hawaii Illinois Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Nevada New York Oregon In general, these are the places where unions have completely taken over public policy, to the severe detriment of society. Now you know: The extortion at the hands of the medical-industrial complex does not only have 315 million victims. It also has 20 million extortionists. #NLC #MedicalIndustrialComplex #NursingCompact

Here's something to seriously think about when creating a work schedule for nurses. Every hour and every minute of a nurses work day is accounted for towards productivity. So isn't it just fair that their uninterrupted breaks should be a high priority too, especially in the current setting where patient acuity is higher than before? There is a lesser chance for mistakes or mishaps when a nurse gets some time to regroup.
The Break Nurse. Creating solutions to prevent burn out, increase engagement and improve patient care. Co-founder of Breakalgo. Drive down missed breaks with Breakalgo.
A ground breaking $200 million dollar award was issued by the King County Superior Court over time clock violations and missed breaks. The judge DOUBLED the compensation, as he found the violation was willful. I am sure you can tack on several million more dollars in court and lawyer fees too! This is not a regrettable medical error where all the holes aligned and resulted in a adverse event--this is something that is completely avoidable but not easy or free! THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE: MAKE SURE NURSES GET BREAKS! You will need to two things to make this happen: 1) hire more staff--have dedicated break nurses and floats to assure breaks are happening and care is not compromised. 2) Make a plan--healthcare is dynamic and conditions and staffing are always in flux. So make the best plan and keep adjusting to meet the needs of your staff and patients. If you want to go for the GOLD--implement BREAKALGO! We have created a world class platform for scheduling, organizing and optimizing breaks for acute care healthcare workers. The time is NOW--the next round of class action lawsuits are already in motion--and the cost of these court awards are going up exponentially. You mind as well do it now, make your staff happy with regular breaks, increase patient satisfaction and safety or you can pay up later! IM me if you would like to learn more about Breakalgo and how it can help your patients, staff and organization! #thebreaknurse #breaks #healthcare #nursing #nursingleadership #AONL Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL Zach Smith, BSN, RN Sarah Wells, MSN, RN, CEN, CNL Ann M. U.S. legislators are divided on a proposal about staffing requirements in nursing homes. Republican lawmakers are pushing a bill to block federal minimum staffing regulations in skilled nursing facilities. This comes as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services considers a new mandate for the industry. #LTCStaffing #longtermcaretalent #longtercarerecruiting #seniorcarestaffing

Breaks are also critically important for your mental and physical health. Deep rest (while awake) has a whole host of benefits and can be as simple as breathing. You can read more about the latest science here: https://lnkd.in/eNrcC5_J!

A compelling new study by the California Health Care Foundation and Healthforce Center at UCSF underscores the pivotal role of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in addressing healthcare gaps across California. As the largest group of non-physician primary care providers, NPs are making significant strides in filling critical voids in primary care and behavioral health services, serving underserved communities and providing culturally competent care to diverse populations. This report not only highlights the invaluable contributions of NPs but also emphasizes the need for continued support and empowerment of these healthcare leaders. #NursePractitioners #HealthcareAccess #PrimaryCare #HealthcarePolicy #NursingLeadership #HealthEquity California Health Care Foundation, Healthforce Center at UCSF, CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF NURSE PRACTITIONERS CANP

Interesting article - how can we, as #nurseeducators in #academia work together with our #hospitaleducator colleagues to help make this transition work for everyone? I can say that UNC provided a tremendous amount of support to me as a new graduate critical care nurse and it made ALL the difference in my confidence and competence as I transitioned into my professional role. https://lnkd.in/eDy6hW9i
