U.S. legislators are divided on a proposal about staffing requirements in nursing homes. Republican lawmakers are pushing a bill to block federal minimum staffing regulations in skilled nursing facilities. This comes as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services considers a new mandate for the industry. #LTCStaffing #longtermcaretalent #longtercarerecruiting #seniorcarestaffing

As I see more and more nursing homes face closure in the face of funding shortfalls and increasing expenses, I wonder how an additional staffing rule can even be considered a good idea. How about we start by adequately funding healthcare for skilled nursing, and let care quality stabilize?
The White House's minimum staffing rule for nursing homes is ill-advised and harmful. It will deprive our most vulnerable Oklahomans of the quality care they need. Facilities, especially in rural areas, will close due to a lack of available workers. We are doing everything in our power to mitigate impacts of the implementation of a rule that will harm Oklahoma seniors. https://lnkd.in/gqH4eZPX #NursingHomeCare #Oklahoma

Long-beleaguered #skillednursing facilities continue to face major staffing challenges, but this is only part of the issue with new mandates, and specifically with long-delayed surveys. This is both masking poor-performing #SNF’s, and allowing them to continue delivering substandard care and simultaneously potentially penalizing higher performing SNFs that have been saddled with incredibly outdated (3+years!) Survey results that impact their reputation as well as ability to operate due to artificially low CMS star ratings. What this means: access to quality Skilled Nursing #care is critical to those who require it, and families won’t accurately know which facilities are either staffed sufficiently or are delivering high-quality care as a result of the massive backlog in CMS oversight. More budget and resources must be allocated to both ensure adequate regulatory oversight and accountability is in place, so that when you’re looking for care, you can believe in the ratings you see, and make an accurately informed decision. #seniorliving #SNF #CMS #survey #healthcare
🚨 More on Nursing Homes vs. Federal Staffing Mandates 🚨 Amid legal battles over staffing rules, a critical issue looms: massive survey inspection backlogs 📊. Delays of 3+ years are common, hindering the mandate exemption processes 🚫. The White House has proposed a FY 2025 budget to boost survey frequency and ensure better oversight by 2026 📈. But provider concerns persist as stringent exemption criteria and workforce shortages challenge nursing homes 🏥. Advocacy groups warn that fewer facilities will meet the requirements, impacting access to care for many older adults, as Skilled Nursing News' Zahida Siddiqi reports, with sources such as Jodi Eyigor with LeadingAge and Holly. Hello all, Take a moment to listen to this great podcast from All Things Considered on NPR with AHCA/NCAL President and CEO, Mark Parkinson. Hear him discuss the realities of this bill and the effects it could have on our vulnerable populations. This isn’t about the industry saying we do not want to have this level of staffing caring for any older adult, it’s the fact that the staff is not there to recruit or hire. Years of funding challenges, competing with other sectors of health care with differing reimbursement modalities including nursing agencies have helped exacerbate this challenging situation. Where are programs that could help train and grow people into these roles? What about looking at increasing schools or colleges that could help enroll and educate the next generation of health care workforce? What about evaluating the payment structure of historically Medicaid and Medicare comparatively to other settings. Staffing is the priority or every healthcare setting out there, we are all recruiting the same shrinking population and the only individuals that will see these effects are the older adults in long term care.
The Administration's staffing mandate is an unreasonable and unfunded standard that only threatens to shut down more nursing homes, displace hundreds of thousands of residents, and restrict seniors' access to care. This week, I explained further on NPR's All Things Considered.

Navigating Nursing Home Staff Mandates: Addressing Staffing Challenges with Innovation The recent implementation of staff mandates in nursing homes has sparked valid concerns about their potential impact on an industry already grappling with staffing shortages. While prioritizing resident safety is paramount, we must acknowledge the strain these mandates may place on our dedicated caregivers and facilities. As leaders in senior living, it's essential to explore innovative solutions that address staffing challenges while upholding the quality of care we strive to provide. **Challenges Ahead:** Staff shortages are a pressing issue facing our industry, exacerbated by the rigorous demands of compliance with new mandates. Without sufficient resources and support, our caregivers risk burnout, and our residents may experience gaps in care. **Seeking Sustainable Solutions:** Rather than solely relying on staffing mandates, let's advocate for comprehensive solutions that promote workforce stability and resident well-being. This may include: 1. **Investing in Recruitment and Retention:** Implement targeted recruitment strategies, competitive compensation packages, and ongoing professional development opportunities to attract and retain skilled caregivers. 2. **Enhancing Technology Integration:** Leverage technology to automate administrative tasks, optimize workflows, and augment care delivery. Telehealth, remote monitoring, and AI-driven solutions can alleviate workload pressures. 3. **Fostering Collaborative Partnerships:** Forge partnerships with educational institutions, community organizations, and government agencies to cultivate a robust pipeline of healthcare professionals and expand caregiver support networks. **Advocating for Change:** Let's engage in constructive dialogue with policymakers and industry stakeholders to advocate for pragmatic policies that address staffing challenges without compromising resident care. We must champion sustainable solutions that prioritize both safety and workforce well-being. I invite you to share your insights and innovative strategies for addressing staffing challenges in senior living. Together, let's pave the way for a resilient and thriving industry that delivers exceptional care to our residents. #SeniorLiving #StaffingChallenges #Innovation #HealthcareAdvocacy #IndustryAdvocacy #WorkforceWellBeing #SeniorCare

If you think this won't affect you at some point, #thinkagain. 💭 Federal estimates suggest 70% of people ages 65 and older will need long-term care during their lifetime. Help protect the industry that provides that care! We're in unprecedented times and our lawmakers need to #payattention! The community #healthcare system needs nursing homes to continue to provide a continuity of care. The federal staffing mandate does NOT favor ensuring the longevity of nursing homes and other long term care providers. #readup 📰 #listenup 👂 #speakup 📣

More than 1,000 nursing home leaders, along with associations like LeadingAge and the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), sent a joint letter to House Ways and Means Committee leaders to reject the federal minimum staffing proposal. Besides stopping the staffing proposal, legislation would also establish an advisory panel on nursing home staffing with voices from urban and rural communities, those that serve as nurses and licensed administrators, as well as officials from CMS. The panel would, within 60 days of convening, submit a report to Congress analyzing workforce shortages and make recommendations to strengthen the staffing pipeline, including investments in training for health professionals. #staffing #staffingproposal #leadingage #AHCA #NCAL #CNA #nursinghomes #skillednursingnews #SNF #CNAtraining #ReadyCNA #CinematicHealth #workforcedevelopment #congress #healthprofessionals #CMS https://hubs.la/Q02ndSH_0
