🌍 Every mine geotechnical activity falls under one of the 40 elements of mine geotechnical engineering. These 40 elements can be categorized under 8 aspects of mining and subdivided into more than 150 activities. Due to this multifaceted nature, Mine Geotechnical Management can be overwhelming at first especially for professionals who are new to Mine Geotech. 🚀 Hence, I had been needed to start an 8-session workshop (covering Planning & Design, Monitoring and Surveillance, Geotechnical Analysis & Assessments, Mitigation & Control strategies, Emergency Response and Recovery, Integration with Mine Operations, Continuous Improvement & Innovation, and Closure & Reclamation) for a group of Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists on Holistic Mine Geotechnical Management Approach that covers all 40 elements of Mine Geotechnical Management. Suspecting the need of this guideline in the Geotech space based on the requests I received, I thought I would share with my fellow Geotechs who this might be of help to. 🌐 Attached you'll find the material from the first session, with more to follow as I progress through the workshop. Feel free to utilize this resource for your professional development and educational pursuits. Remember, while this serves as a robust generic guideline, it should be tailored to fit the unique demands of your projects and sites. Stay tuned for more, and best wishes in all your geotechnical endeavors! #MineGeotechnicalEngineering #Geotech #MiningEngineering #ProfessionalDevelopment #GeotechnicalEngineering

GCG Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Serena Che, to deliver a British Tunnelling Society Young Members (BTSYM) Lecture... We are pleased to announce that GCG’s Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Serena Che, will be delivering an in-person lecture, organised by the British Tunnelling Society Young Members (BTSYM), entitled ‘Overcoming challenges in horizontal directional drilling – a geotechnical engineer’s perspective’, on 11th December 2024, at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), from 18:00 – 19:30. This event is FREE TO ATTEND. Event Information: Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is a trenchless method commonly used for pipeline and cable installation. It is ideally suited to crossings beneath natural and manufactured obstacles and offers substantial cost, safety and environmental benefits. Despite the wide use of HDD, there remain concerns regarding project risk in certain situations. Key to HDD success is good management of the drilling fluid and the avoidance of excessive mud loss. Fundamental risks in HDD arise from pressure build-up in-bore leading to hydrofracturing of the ground, heave of the overburden and mud loss – either to formation, subsurface infrastructure or up to the surface. Poor cuttings transport is a main trigger for bore blockage, leading to potential hydrofracture and the manifestation of the hazards associated with these risks. In this lecture, a case study involving HDD bores for cable landfall of an offshore windfarm is discussed. The aforementioned risks associated with mud loss are most severe in this type of HDD, where drilling starts at a clifftop and descends to punchout in the seabed. In-bore pressures before punchout are elevated by the hydrostatic head of the drilling fluid from the clifftop entry pit. This lecture will conclude with some lessons learnt, recommendations to minimise the risks of hydrofracture and bore blockage, and advice to other young engineers interested in this field. Following the event, there will be a networking session with drinks at ICE Kendal’s bar, sponsored by Geotechnical Consulting Group (GCG). Driving pile foundations through subsurface obstructions, such as debris, presents challenges that can lead to issues like pile damage, misalignment, and reduced load-bearing capacity. To mitigate these challenges, a combination of effective strategies is necessary. Key approaches include conducting thorough geotechnical surveys to identify obstructions, removing debris during pre-construction site preparation, and selecting appropriate pile types, such as steel or micro-piles. Adjusting pile driving methods—like using impact hammers with variable energy control, vibratory techniques, and jetting—can also help navigate difficult conditions. Implementing real-time monitoring allows for immediate responses to encountered obstructions, while pre-drilling pilot holes and using temporary casings can further ease the driving process. In cases of extensive debris, alternative foundation systems like drilled shafts or caissons may be more effective. Employing rock-socketing or augering techniques and adjusting pile layout when necessary ensures structural integrity. Overall, these combined strategies enable project teams to address subsurface obstructions successfully, ensuring the foundation system's integrity and load-bearing capacity through proper planning and adaptability.

As part of the Hazelwood Rehabilitation Project, ENGIE is proposing to create a pit lake as the primary method for rehabilitating the site and addressing the substantial stability and fire risks associated with a large coal mine void. As the mine transitions from the ‘empty’ void scenario to the full pit lake, a number of geotechnical considerations need to be taken into account. This paper presents the reliability-based assessment approach the authors undertook to understand the critical considerations during the planned lake-filling phase of the Hazelwood mine for closure, and the manner in which these were assessed using reliability-based metrics. The final rehabilitation proposal is currently working through an Environmental Effects Statement, to which this work is a key contributor to.
