Damage Detection of a structure: deflection: Is it a settlement or swelling? A significant deflection was reported in a structure. We all were curious about the type of deflection and the reason(s). In this project I led a group of profession engineer to find it and the results surprised me. In damage detection, depending on the project, generally I follow these steps: -First Step: Site Visit and collecting data -Second Step: Monitoring the structure for at least 6 month -Third Step: Geotechnical Investigation (During the monitoring) -Forth Step: Trench and Foundation Investigation (During the monitoring and drilling) -Fifth Step: Analyzing and controlling geotechnical bearing capacity of foundation -Sixth Step: Finding the cause -And finally: Feasibility study and proposing the best solution method

Drilling rock bolts in a road tunnel project in Turkey. Rock bolts support the ground by transferring loads from the unstable or fractured rock mass to a more stable zone. They are typically installed into the rock mass using drilling equipment, and then grouted in place to provide additional anchorage. Once installed, the rock bolts effectively "stitch" the rock mass together, creating a reinforced structure that resists deformation and collapse. We have covered all tunnel construction techniques in our Online Tunnel Engineering course. When it comes to understanding soil behavior under pressure, Pressure Meter Testing (PMT) is one of the most effective processes. By expanding a cylindrical cavity in the ground, it measures the soil's strength and stiffness, helping engineers gain essential insights into how a site will perform under load. Benefits of PMT: ✔️ Flexible and Efficient: Can be performed with existing drilling equipment, making it a versatile option for various projects. ✔️ Precise Data: Offers accurate readings for designing foundations, from shallow to deep, with a focus on both lateral and vertical capacities. ✔️ Reliable Long-Term Results: Models time-dependent settlement to support structure stability for years to come. GTA’s Drilling and Subsurface Exploration services utilize PMT to provide the detailed information needed to design safe, stable foundations. Tunnel Diaries :-I see core discing in the core correct me if I am wrong … means there is brittle rock and high insitu stress ….This failure mode has been recognized as an important index for assessing underground projects under high in situ stresses. In vertical boreholes, core discing is a result of high horizontal stresses. As maximum horizontal stress increases, the average disc thickness consistently declines. In vertical boreholes, discing can determine the direction and approximate ratio of the horizontal principal stresses. Any asymmetry in the disc can give a measure of the inclination of the principal stress away from the vertical.Reposting it for a greater benefit…..Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost ….

Tunnel drilling. We drilled the tunnel 1.8m below the road carriageway as directed by KeNHA and the tunnel is 41m long. Geological investigations and geotechnical interpretation play a crucial role in drilling of the tunnel. The prime purpose of any tunnel site investigation should be to obtain the maximum amount of information on rock characteristics, structural systems and groundwater conditions. This information is important to the tunnel designer in that it should enable him to anticipate the behaviour of the rock . The information is also important to the contractor in that it should provide him with a basis for establishing the optimum tunnelling method and the type of services which he will require in order to meet the construction schedules.
