Our fingers and toes are crossed for tomorrow's PPA Independent Publisher Awards! Best of luck to all our clients who were shortlisted for awards, and to the incredible work put in across the wider Marketforce team that led to our own nomination in tomorrow's event. But first, bring on a day of learning at the PPA Independent Publisher Conference! The packed conference schedule is so varied, we've found it difficult to narrow down the sessions to attend - we want to see them all! Every day is a school day after all, and knowledge sharing amongst publishers is how our category will continue to grow and evolve. #PPA #Conference #Magazines #UK #Distribution #KnowledgeSharing #Awards #Recognition

GCI: When GCI in Alaska shuts down cable TV service in 2025, will the company remain a cable operator under Title VI of the Communications Act? The answer could be an expensive one for Anchorage-based GCI, perhaps running in the many millions of dollars per year. "Any entity that no longer offers cable service also will give up the advantages or obligations of operating pursuant to Title VI of the Communications Act," said Cheryl Leanza, an attorney with Best Best & Krieger. Under current FCC regulations, something called the mixed-use rule bars cities from imposing their 5% cable franchise fee on the broadband revenue of cable operators. But the mixed use rule does not shield pure-play broadband ISPs, which looks like GCI’s future legal status in the coming months. The city of Portland has told the FCC that the mixed-use rule robs cities of $3.75 billion annually. GCI has 156,400 broadband subscribers. Assuming each pays about $70 a month for Internet, GCI could be on the hook for $6.6 million under a 5% right of way fee without the mixed-use rule backstop. That’s a big number compared to zero. It's always possible that GCI protected itself ahead of time in its latest franchise renewals and other legal agreements. "The impact of a decision to terminate cable offerings on the provider's continued operation, and on consumers, depends on state and local law and the agreements and permissions these providers have in place with the relevant authorities – including terms relating to terminating a franchise," Leanza said. https://lnkd.in/e2JPS_kj

Eek, I've always wanted my writing to be in a book at the airport and now I've done it! This HBR guide features an article I wrote with Dr Elena Doldor on the importance of acknowledging office politics and trying to make it more inclusive. If you happen to be at an airport (or any major bookshop if you're watching your carbon footprint) then do have a flick through it while you're trying to convince yourself that the bar of dairy milk at the till could be calorie free. https://lnkd.in/eVpGVRTz

If you are a publisher trying to figure out consumer value exchanges for registration and email capture, here is a great webinar I did with Lucy Rogers at LiveRamp. It was created to showcase all kinds of value exchanges with examples. Most of the examples have little to do with Bonbon Technologies, and showcase approaches from companies like Piano, Sided, OpenWeb, Poool, Slickstream, Disqus https://lnkd.in/gVXMWSSj
