Should be an interesting and topical discussion
The Great Divide: Australia's Housing Mess And How To Fix It Join ABC economics commentator Alan Kohler and a panel to discuss Australia’s housing mess and ideas for its repair. Alan’s Quarterly essay identifies the start of the 21st century as the time at which house prices got away from the grasp of those who did not already own one. Australian society was altered by the schism between the home owners and the others. Inequality and intergenerational disparities were profoundly changed by the runaway house prices. Alan will tell the story of how we got into this mess – and how we might get out of it. Register now: https://lnkd.in/g_vGTcX2

What frameworks do researchers use to understand differences in housing policies and outcomes? How do they fare in terms of classificatory and explanatory power? My article with Giuseppe Montalbano is in print as the lead article in the most recent volume of Housing, Theory and Society. In it, we engage in a systematic literature review of housing regime typologies. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/ehtuTaaD 📚 #housing #explanations #openaccess

The Economics of Housing Supply: Pleased to have had the opportunity to work on this with Chris Leishman and Parliament of NSW Research Service. We cover key issues including: 📌 Responsiveness of new housing supply to demand 📌 The importance of new and established housing stock 📌 Filtering processes 📌 Evidence to inform planning reform 📌 Developer behaviour 📌 Complexities of the housing production process 📌 Spatial variations across housing markets #housingsupply #housingaffordability #housingpolicy
What matters about housing supply? The NSW Parliamentary Research Service has just released a new paper titled “The Economics of Housing Supply” by Professors Rachel Ong ViforJ and Chris Leishman. This paper explores how housing supply responds to demand and implications for affordability, unpacking common assumptions about factors that affect housing supply. Read the paper now: https://lnkd.in/gTY2q9Rm The NSW Parliamentary Research Service was established over 30 years ago and has been providing impartial research to members of Parliament and the people of NSW since. #nswparliament

Lots of great information in this paper on the economics of housing, including elasticity of supply, stocks and flows etc. And I quote, "It is often assumed that planning regulations significantly hinder new housing supply, but the Australian evidence is actually mixed regarding the extent to which planning has a negative impact on new supply... Developer behaviour can affect the flow of new supply on to the market, but this aspect of the production process does not receive much attention in Australia’s policy commentary."

Interesting consideration on how we can take a more proactive approach to housing need based on existing stock, rather than long-term and mostly unreliable projections.
With the Competition and Markets Authority’s recent housebuilding report highlighting how aspects of the planning system have contributed to the undersupply of new housing, Andrew Lowe and Antony Pollard reflect on the issues surrounding housing targets and explain how housing stock can form a reliable foundation for a new approach. Read their comment piece to learn more: https://lnkd.in/e_imX_fY To continue the conversation or for further details, reach out to Associate Director, Economics, Andrew Lowe or Director, Head of Economics, Antony Pollard. #HousingTargets #Housebuilding #Economics

This sobering report makes it clear that we still have much work to do in Oregon. We encourage you to take a look at the full State of the State's Housing, which highlights important data. Among the many concerning statistics, here is one to know: For every $1 Oregonians earned in wage increases, the median sales price of a home increased by $7.10.
