In very exciting news, I'm hiring the City & County of SF's 4th Chief Data Officer. This role leads the DataSF team (6 engineers, data scientists, & program folks), the SF open data program, & citywide data sharing & practice. https://lnkd.in/ggmj67Ve The CDO reports directly to me, & DataSF is part of our 48-person Digital & Data Services team in the City Administrator's office. We're a friendly & diverse team with people from many professional backgrounds. CAO is a general, but very forward-thinking office led by the excellent Carmen Chu (don't approach her about this please! just telling you I love working for her). It's a great place to form partnerships, & DataSF works with many permitting, safety, & critical services departments as well as the Dept of Technology, Controller's Office, & Mayor's Office of Innovation. Couple things you should know: - this is a hybrid job that requires one day per week in-office in downtown SF. Sorry we can’t do remote, but it’s for a pretty cool reason - SF deputizes all City employees as disaster service workers in case of an earthquake/etc. So you need to be near. - from the posting, you need to meet the minimum qualifications (5 years managing programs with data & 3 years managing professional staff) but you don’t need to meet all of the desired qualifications - though of course if you do, tell us! In applying for govt jobs, it’s worth taking a minute to make sure your resume & cover letter respond directly to the parts of the job description you meet. We don’t use AI reviews, but we do have non-technical HR folks. So please, spell out your management exp, for example. If you have broad data experience, some of it technical, policy chops, an informed perspective on AI & emerging tech, ability to present & influence at an exec level & are a great, caring manager & senior peer, we'd love to see your application!

⚠️WEEK 45-47, 2024: [1642 jobs] DATA JOB OPENINGS IN AUSTRALIA⚠️ Hi all, We couldn’t update the spreadsheet for the past two weeks because of some tech issues. Thanks so much for being patient! The good news? It’s all updated now! We’ve added everything from the last two and a half weeks, so we’re all caught up. 🎉 It’s looking good again. RECAP: List of updates to the spreadsheet: - The biggest update is that going forward, we will source jobs from LinkedIn as well (earlier the database only included Seek). This will ensure completeness and cover almost all the #data jobs under the Australian skies. - We have now included Data Engineering and associated roles too (earlier the spreadsheet included only "Data Analyst" roles) - We have added some AI-powered fields (beware of some hallucinations and factual mistakes). Also, we have added some new fields. The new fields added are as follows: 1) CITY and STATE - Separate columns for city and state for easier filtering 2) TOP TECH SKILLS - top tech skills or tools mentioned in the job description. Multiple tools are comma-separated 3) FUNCTION - function the role or team is related to (e.g. finance, marketing, human resources) 4) INDUSTRY - The industry or domain the company is related to (banking, construction, education, healthcare etc.) 5) PR/ CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENT - Flagged if this information is explicitly mentioned in the job description 6) SECURITY CLEARANCE - Flagged if this information is explicitly mentioned in the job description 7) LOCATION TYPE - Whether the location is remote/regional or in a major city

I have seen a lot of posts talking about how hard it is to land your first data job. Yes, landing your first data job can be hard. However, it doesn't get any easier. Landing your 2nd, 3rd, etc. data jobs can be just as hard, if not harder . . . #data #job #hiring

Alta Planning + Design has a job posting on its website for a 'Civic Data Analyst II' to be based in Seattle, Washington. The full job description is on our website. At a 'level II' this is not an entry level position but it is fairly close. I am not involved with this hiring process but I can tell that a lot of applications are coming in. In the spirit of 'Career Connect with Kate' with ITE Canada I wanted to write about how to get an application noticed in what will probably be a large pile: (1) This is for a Civic Data Analyst position so please know what that is and demonstrate an understanding; (2) If you are truly proficient in the computer languages mentioned in the job posting then do more than just say you are proficient; (3) Alta has a large social media presence so it is easy to demonstrate an interest in the company in your application material with something more compelling then a generic statement; (4) If the application gives the option to provide a cover letter (or requires one) then submit a cover letter. Some people think cover letters are a waste of time but in a deep pile of applications they could make the difference. One of the themes from 'Career Connect' is instead of submitting to a high number of job postings with a standard resume, try for more focussed applications of a higher quality. Exhausting I know.

Organisations consistently make this mistake when they are hiring for a Chief Data Officer. They think that 'Chief Data Officer' is some sort of defined qualification like a Doctor or Accountant. And that Data is a regulated industry. Because of this, and because they aren't quite sure what they are looking for, their only search strategy becomes mass mailing folks who have the Chief Data Officer job title. This ignores a large section of the talent pool whose experience & values might align strongly with the companies mission. #chiefdataofficer #dataanalytics
