Organisations consistently make this mistake when they are hiring for a Chief Data Officer. They think that 'Chief Data Officer' is some sort of defined qualification like a Doctor or Accountant. And that Data is a regulated industry. Because of this, and because they aren't quite sure what they are looking for, their only search strategy becomes mass mailing folks who have the Chief Data Officer job title. This ignores a large section of the talent pool whose experience & values might align strongly with the companies mission. #chiefdataofficer #dataanalytics
It's disheartening to witness organizations making this mistake when hiring for a Chief Data Officer. The misconception that it's a predefined qualification akin to a Doctor or Accountant overlooks the diverse skill set and expertise required for the role. Data is indeed a dynamic and multifaceted field, often with individuals possessing varying levels of understanding. Many talented professionals with data skills find themselves working alongside those who don't fully grasp the intricacies of data but still want to influence outcomes. By solely focusing on individuals with the Chief Data Officer job title, organizations risk missing out on a wealth of talent whose experiences and values could greatly benefit their mission. Understanding the nuanced technical requirements and strategic thinking involved in data leadership roles is crucial for effective hiring. Let's hope for a shift towards a more holistic approach to recruiting in the data analytics space. #chiefdataofficer #dataanalytics 🌟
Worth noting that not all CDO roles are created equally. Some will demand a bias towards change and transformation, some will bias the deep technical insight, and some will bias the ability to manage the rest of the organisation so the data team can do data things effectively.
Why only the Chief Data Officer? The same is true for any role I ever applied for. Most staffing specialists have no clue about the role they are hiring for and are guided by the title only. The advanced recruiters would also consider a few keywords and synonymous titles for second-priority candidates.

8moJeremy Wyatt I assume a lot of applicants are already AI-filtered based on CV and cover letter. Wait until genAI moves more broadly and deeply into this space. I wonder if the extra intelligence will make it easier or more difficult for the right candidates to surface?
