Each year, the partners of C. Hoare & Co. donate up to 10% of the bank’s profits to the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), which makes grants to a wide range of charitable causes. The top 300 foundation grant-makers in the UK donated £3.7bn in 2021-22. Although the GBT’s contribution to this is comparatively small, the Hoare family believes it can play an important role through funding early-stage initiatives that prove a model; this allows larger resources to follow once the approach has been validated. An example of catalytic funding is the GBT’s support of Project Limitless, a charity set up to provide children with soft prosthetic limbs. The family could see how these custom designed limbs allow children to do so much more than is possible with standard NHS prosthetics and was delighted to be able to fund a ladder of pilot projects which allowed Project Limitless to demonstrate the success of their approach and scale activities accordingly. There’s a common myth that hospice care is fully funded by the NHS. Unfortunately that isn’t true - they mainly rely on fundraising and the generosity of the public in the local community. It currently costs around 1.6 billion a year to run UK hospices, around a third of that cost is covered by the government, but the rest is made up from donations, legacies and various fund raising activities. It’s time to increase state funding and raise awareness to ensure local hospices can continue providing essential care to our communities. Navigating Challenges in Small Charities - how are you supporting your community? At The Oxygen Works, we are facing unprecedented challenges due to the increasing demand for our services, rising costs, and reduced donations. Small charities like ours are under significant pressure to meet the growing needs of our community while managing financial constraints. We subsidise essential services such as HBOT, Theraplate, Physio, and wellbeing groups by over 50%, making it difficult to offer additional financial support. The financial landscape has made it hard for individuals to donate, yet the need for our services has never been greater. Our Oxygen Therapy Wellbeing Fund is one avenue of support, but maintaining it is becoming increasingly challenging. Support from communities and businesses to support small charities has arguably never been greater. "The Guide to Grants for Individuals in Need 2024/25" from Directory of Social Change (a copy of which is available at our centre), is an invaluable resource which lists charities offering nearly £376 million in grants, providing much-needed support to individuals. Together, we can make a difference, this I believe to be true. But I am also not sure whether it has ever felt more challenging than it does at the moment?
