A third person confirmed positive for H5 avian influenza after exposure to infected cows has developed respiratory symptoms not seen in the prior patients. The new patient, who also developed conjunctivitis, also reported cough, congestion, sore throat and watery eyes. Tests to determine whether the virus was present at high levels in the upper respiratory system have not been completed yet. Replication of influenza virus in the upper respiratory system is one of the properties that lead to human-to-human transmission. Other possibility is that breathing in infectious aerosols in the milking parlor might have caused the respiratory symptoms in the patient. The patient was given antiviral treatment with oseltamivir, is isolating at home in Michigan, and their symptoms are resolving, according to the CDC statement. Sequencing of swabs from this patient and serotyping of the viral neuraminidase to determine whether is N1, is currently ongoing. #influenza #avianinfluenza #birdflu #evolution #H5N1 #health #globalhealth #publichealth #medicine #CDC #WHO #Michigan #USA https://lnkd.in/g7XvXV2C

„Other possibility is that breathing in infectious aerosols in the milking parlor might have caused the respiratory symptoms in the patient.“ He was the only one in there? Highly unlikely. That’s like grasping for straws.

This person's cough is particularly concerning since it is more likely to lead to transmission to others, compared to the two previous cases, that just appeared to exhibit conjunctivitis.

Seems like a similar presentation to the earlier 2003 avian A/H7N7 outbreak in the Netherlands - that remained mainly confined to poultry workers: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14987882/ Hopefully, similarly, the clinical disease will remain limited and the spread will be confined to dairy farm workers only

It sounds serious that the patient got respiratory symptoms from H5 avian flu. Glad to hear they're getting treatment and recovering, Juan Lama.

H5? So we are good then. BARDA spent a fortune on a H5 vaccine stockpile so we won’t need to irrationally spend tax payer money on startups looking for a bailout like we do regularly.

Influenza is one of the notorious virus, due to its ability for genetic adaptability.
