Measles, also known as rubeola, remains a significant public health concern due to its highly contagious nature and potential for outbreaks. This viral illness typically features symptoms like fever and a distinctive rash that spreads easily when an infected individual talks, coughs, or sneezes. Unlike many other infectious diseases, there is no specific medical treatment for measles; instead, patients must endure the illness until it resolves on its own. However, the advent of the measles vaccine has significantly reduced the incidence of this disease, marking a substantial milestone in global health efforts. Amidst recent reports of measles outbreaks across the United States, concerns over the resurgence of this highly contagious disease have once again taken center stage. There is good evidence that we as a society need to invest more effort in controlling Covid-19. This virus is a constant threat with periodic waves driven by subvariants that have evolved to evade our immunity. It is concerning that the last 3 waves have increased in peak size with the recent wave (number 6) causing more than 55 hospital admissions a day and more than 30 deaths a week. Each infection carries the risk of Long Covid which can affect people of any age. A group of NZ scientists and clinicians have proposed a coordinated respiratory infectious disease strategy to better protect our health, wellbeing, and economy from recurring infections with Covid-19 and other respiratory infections: https://lnkd.in/gCs9h9Dt #Covid19 #RespiratoryInfections #CovidControl #CovidPrevention

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) are highly contagious diseases that can lead to severe health complications, such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and congenital defects. The importance of testing for these diseases cannot be overstated, particularly to ensure that individuals are immune, either through vaccination or previous infection, and to manage outbreaks effectively. The VirClia Lotus system from VIRCELL S.L. is a pivotal tool in the fight against these diseases, offering advanced, precise immunodiagnostics on a platform that can test for over 90 infectious disease parameters. This capability ensures that, alongside MMR, healthcare providers can monitor a broad spectrum of infectious agents, making it an indispensable resource in clinical settings. The system's STAT function allows for the prioritization of urgent samples, which is critical in outbreak scenarios where timely responses are required. Moreover, with a quick turnaround time—initial results are ready within just 70 minutes and subsequent tests every 35 seconds—healthcare providers can act swiftly to implement necessary public health measures. Testing for MMR using the VirClia Lotus not only helps in early detection and management of these diseases but also plays a crucial role in monitoring vaccine coverage and effectiveness, thereby supporting public health efforts to maintain or achieve herd immunity. #Diagnostics #MedicalEquipment #MeaslesMumpsRubella #MMR #Vaccine #Outbreak #biorus

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐱is a rare viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus, related to smallpox. It typically causes fever, rash, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected individuals or animals, and occasionally through respiratory droplets. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 include avoiding contact with infected animals or people, practicing good hygiene, and vaccination (which also helps against smallpox). Treatment focuses on symptom relief, with antivirals used in severe cases. Recent outbreaks outside endemic regions highlight the need for vigilance and public health measures.

Holiday infectious disease update, courtesy of Dr. Katelyn Jetelina, MPH PhD aka "Your Local Epidemiologist": "If you’re sick right now or someone shows up sick on Thanksgiving, it’s most likely the common cold. Two viruses, enteroviruses or rhinoviruses, are, well, common right now." It seems more prevalent right in the south and in the District of Columbia. There is a surge in mycoplasma pneumonia aka walking pneumonia this year, especially among school-aged kids. RSV is in full swing and increasing - children under 2 are at highest risk. COVID-19 is very low right now (save your COVID tests until levels rise, likely in late December-January). Vaccination rates for COVID and RSV are higher than last year, so that will likely help keep people out of our hospitals and ICUs. Have a safe, healthy holiday week! 📢 The Covid Summer Wave is Here Covid infections are on the rise again, with 39 states seeing an increase in cases driven by three new variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a notable uptick in emergency department visits and hospitalizations. California is experiencing a significant surge, with Covid prevalence in wastewater and positive test rates climbing from 3% to 7.5% in the last month. Experts attribute this rise to increased summer travel and indoor gatherings, along with the emergence of new variants KP.2, KP.3, and LB.1. These variants, collectively known as “FLiRT,” are more infectious and possibly more immune-evasive. With the Fourth of July approaching and intense summer heat driving people indoors, the spread may continue. Vulnerable individuals are advised to get the latest Covid vaccine and consider antiviral medications like Paxlovid. Stay informed and take precautions to protect yourself and others. Share your thoughts and experiences as we navigate this summer wave together. 🌡️😷 #Covid19 #HealthAlert #StaySafe

Reports of whooping cough or pertussis cases were lower than usual over the past few years, during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the United States is beginning to return to pre-pandemic patterns where more than 10,000 cases are typically reported each year. In 2024, reported cases of pertussis increased across the United States, indicating a return to more typical trends. Preliminary data show that about five times as many cases have been reported as of week 38, reported on September 21, 2024, compared to the same time in 2023. The number of reported cases this year is higher than what was seen at the same time in 2019, prior to the pandemic. Vaccination is the best way to prevent pertussis. However, as typical infection patterns return to the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expects pertussis cases to increase both in unvaccinated and vaccinated populations. Pertussis occurs in vaccinated people since protection from vaccination fades over time. Mpox is a rare disease that is caused by infection with the mpox virus. In May of 2022, multiple cases of mpox were identified in several non-endemic countries. On July 23 of the same year, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement declaring that the global mpox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). Shortly after, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) also issued a statement to provide an update on the state of this health concern. By November 21, 2022 the number of mpox cases had climbed to over 80,488 cases worldwide, with 103 locations being non-endemic countries. In August, PHAC released an online statement that they are “closely monitoring” the mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and neighbouring countries, and is working with national and international partners to monitor the situation. While the risk of contracting mpox in Canada is low, cases have been reported. Mpox is characterized by flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle ache, fatigue, followed by a bumpy rash, or pox, which starts on the chest and spreads to the hands and feet. Mpox infection is also characterized by swollen lymph nodes. The incubation is approximately seven to 17 days. There is a vaccine available called IMVAMUNE and it is given in a series of two doses at least 28 days apart Please visit https://lnkd.in/gb8xVRNN for more information. #MpoxOutbreak #PublicHealth #InfectiousDisease #GlobalHealth #Vaccine #WHO #PHAC #PHEIC #IMVAMUNE #HealthEmergency
