In this piece I am quoted about the ability of the topical antibiotic Neosporin to induce cells to produce anti-viral substances in the nose that may be able to reduce the ability of respiratory viruses to infect and cause disease https://lnkd.in/eZ4riM-j

Ebola, also known as Ebola virus disease (EVD) and Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF), is a viral hemorrhagic fever in humans and other primates, caused by ebolaviruses. Symptoms typically start anywhere between two days and three weeks after infection. The first symptoms are usually fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and headaches. These are usually followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash and decreased liver and kidney function, at which point some people begin to bleed both internally and externally. #Breastfeeding can protect against respiratory viral infections through the direct effect of Human milk ligosaccharides againsts viruses and its indirect effect through the proliferation of #Bifidobacterium and increased #acetate. NOTES: - In #Infants worldwide, #Respiratory_syncytial_virus (#RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory infections, including #Bronchiolitis, which is a major source of infant mortality. - #Breastfed Infants present a lower incidence and less severe forms of RSV lower respiratory infections. - #Human_milk_oligosaccharides (#HMOS) reduce the viral load and the inflammatory signaling in cultured RSV-infected respiratory human cells. - Intake of infant formula containing synthetic HMOS has been shown to increase Bifidobacterium abundance and that of its metabolites, especially Acetate, in infant feces, and to reduce lower respiratory tract infections during the first year of life. https://lnkd.in/eiJ4ci6S

ASCP Daily Diagnosis 05/22 CST Body lice are parasites that can spread disease and usually affect people living in crowded conditions. They're different from head lice, which are far more common in the U.S. and typically affect school-age kids. Both insects feed on human blood. Once infected, the lymph glands in the person's groin swell. Quick medical attention and treatment with antibiotics can clear up the infection. But the scenario isn't always so positive. If the person is in a dusty environment and they breathe in the bacteria, they can develop pneumonia. Within a few days they can become mortally ill. https://lnkd.in/d_xYt3zQ

#Schistosomiasis is a disease that affects more than half a billion people worldwide. The disease can be fatal and there is currently no vaccine against it. The human immune system generally struggles to clear the parasites. Once they enter the human body, these parasites can stay for decades, laying eggs and damaging organs. Yet interestingly, rhesus macaques (rhesus monkeys) can develop immunity against these parasites and self-cure. In this feature article for the Drug Discovery News magazine, I unpacked the work of researchers at Instituto Butantan in Brazil whose mission is to find a #vaccine against schistosomiasis by looking at the macaques' immune response. This work offers hope for breaking the chain of infection for this neglected tropical disease for good. #immunesystem #neglectedtropicaldisease #drugdiscovery

September in upon us and at least here in the Northern hemisphere it means the beginning of the flu and infection season. Turkey tail, or Coriolus versicolor, is thus the perfect choice as the mushroom of the month. There is another reason we want to talk about it: there is a risk that its use will be not allowed in Germany, as it might be considered too much of a "novel food" by the authorities. People from our companies are trying to pitch turkey tail's case in the court, that there is enough use cases and demand for this mushroom. And there should be, as like one can see from the image, the mushroom has a lot of potential as a medicinal mushroom. From boosting the immune system and protecting against viral infections to supporting with liver dysfunction, we'd say there are plenty of potential use cases. Not to mention that the mushroom is studied, and in Asia already often used, for its supporting capabilities during chemotherapy. Now, we want to be clear: no medicinal mushroom should replace any traditional medical treatments during serious illnesses, especially in the case of cancer. But, studies have shown that the turkey tail could offer support for the patient while they go through chemotherapy. We hope that studies on turkey tail as well as its use can go on, because there is a lot of potential in this rather ugly-looking mushroom. We will let you know as soon as we hear anything regarding the legal process.

Pathogenesis of Tuberculosis 1. When a person inhales air that contains droplet nuclei containing M. tuberculosis, most of the larger droplets become lodged in the upper respiratory tract (the nose and throat), where infection is unlikely to develop. 2. However, smaller droplet nuclei may reach the small air sacs of the lung (the alveoli), where infection may begin. 3. Infection may begin when droplet nuclei reach the alveoli. In the alveoli, some of the tubercle bacilli are killed, but a few multiply in the alveoli and enter the lymph nodes and bloodstream and spread throughout the body. 4. Bacilli may reach any part of the body, including areas where TB disease is more likely to develop. These areas include the upper portions of the lungs, as well as the kidneys, the brain, and bone. Within 2 to 8 weeks, however, the body’s immune system. 5. The system usually intervenes, halting multiplication and preventing further spread. The immune system is the system of cells and tissues in the body that protect the body from foreign substances. #tuberculosis

Unraveling Guinea-Worm Disease: A Persistent Challenge in Parasitic Infections Guinea-worm disease, caused by the parasitic worm Dracunculus medinensis, stands as one of the most notable infections affecting humans due to its unique life cycle and debilitating impact. Known as the largest tissue parasite affecting humans, the adult female Guinea-worm can reach lengths of 600 to 800 mm and a diameter of 2 mm, carrying approximately 3 million embryos. The lifecycle of the Guinea-worm begins with larvae released into water sources when infected individuals consume co... https://lnkd.in/dn5-pJRP #GuineaWormDisease >>>Read full article by clicking the link below...

Top Health Trend: Reducing Inflammation https://lnkd.in/dyWHqSgp
Inflammation is a key aspect of the immune system’s response to injury and infection. Acute inflammation helps to heal damaged tissue and defend itself against pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Problems arise when the inflammatory process goes on for too long and becomes chronic. Inflammation is at the root of most diseases. In this video, you will learn how to cope with inflammation to prevent the onset of chronic diseases. -------------------- #AlphaCare #alphacareinc #inflammation #immunesystem #immunity #bacteria #viruses #diseases #chronic #health #wellness #healthylifestyle
