It was a great honor to participate in the RARE Revolution Magazine REV-inar alongside an incredible panel of women who have dedicated their work to advancing the care of people with rare diseases, worldwide. Wendy Erler, Yael Weiss and Professor Lara Bloom, CNE A few excerpts from my participation: On RD Caregivers: "The impact of caregiving on women is disproportionate. The economy of care is an important issue that needs to be addressed through policies that protect women." On Women in Science: "While representation is essential, I think our (women's) presence on boards, on teams, on publications, etc., should be predicated on the expertise and the insight we bring, rather than just because we're a woman or because we're a Latin American, or because we're a minority. It's important for it to be about meritocracy and ensuring that anyone's participation is based on their capacity to add value, and that they're acknowledged for their skills and contribution to the field." These stats are an important reminder that it’s never been more crucial to support women in healthcare. If you know me well, you know that I’m big on women supporting other women and standing up to injustices. Thankfully I work with some amazing women who feel the same way and this project wouldn’t be possible without them. Furthermore, we’ve directly supported over 1,800 women by providing access to one-on-one mentoring, industry-specific events, and strategic networks. These initiatives have guided women as they break into high-growth industries, navigate career changes, and establish meaningful community networks.   The numbers tell a powerful story, but the heart of the impact lies in the experiences of the women who themselves - the connections they’ve made, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the transformations they’ve achieved. Leaving the Wake Invests in Women event and had something on my mind I wanted to share. Video transcript below! Plan To Action #DEI #Allyship #Action #SasstriceRandomRamblings Hey y'all, I just attended an amazing event put on by Wake Invest in Women where we discussed labor market and economic data and wage disparities in Wake County, then had a fireside chat on leveraging AI and workforce solutions. One thing that struck me at this event though, as I looked around the room of about 100 attendees, there were only four who appeared to be male. Four. This is a trend I've noticed. Groups like WIIW will put together these incredible events to support organizations in their efforts to create more equitable and inclusive spaces, and the people who are directly impacted will show up, but nowhere near as many allies are in the room or those who actually need to hear the message. All this to say, if you are someone who says DEI matters to you and your organization, I implore you to take part in conversations like these, even if you think it isn't a space for you because you don't match the identity in the event title or organization's name. This is how you can learn and how we expand the impact of these efforts. As a starting point, if you're in the Wake County area, check out the next WIIW event in March.
