World Sleep Day: Coffee and Caffeine 🤔 When Can I Drink Coffee? ☕️ How much coffee do you drink? And when do you drink it? 📈 There’s around 100mg of caffeine in an average home mug of instant coffee and 40 to 50mg in tea, a little in cola and chocolate and too much in energy drinks 🕛 Lots of people sensibly stop drinking coffee at noon thinking that it will have left their system by bedtime. 🌞 But consider how much coffee you’re consuming during the morning. ⏳ Caffeine has a half-life of about 5-6 hours – this means that after around 5 hours, there’s half the amount of the caffeine left in the blood. So after one cup, that’s roughly 50mg. ⏱ So the quarter-life is 10-12 hours. 🕰 All well and good if you drink just one mug at 8am – by bedtime, there’s barely any left. 🍽️ But what if you drink 4 coffees before lunch? 😬 That’s as much as 100mg of caffeine still in your blood at bedtime. I mean, you may as well neck a pre-bed espresso! 💡 So consider when you consume caffeinated drinks as well as how much, both factors will affect your sleep (as described in my last video). 🥤 The largest Starbucks Americano has about 300mg caffeine 👍 Coffee, tea and caffeine can be great; enjoy them. 💤 But sleep is important, so it seems wise to think about how much you really need? #sleeptips #insomnia #coffee #caffeine #caffeinefix #sleep
