Chapters 4 & 7 of my next book (New World Empires: Cultures of power & governance in the Americas) deal with constitutional plutocracy in the United States. In this talk, I discuss the origins of US constitutional plutocracy - a system of government that generally allows monied interests to prevail over popular ones while providing voters with a binary choice between more or less apologetic defenders of plutocracy. https://lnkd.in/egSZ6FY2

Owning the Libs: The Contemporary Politics of Envy - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gFWr7Mq8 This essay defines Owning the Libs (OTL), a logic of envy, characterized by a subject’s need to both deny another enjoyment and to frustrate the capacity of these political opponents to live. My case studies focus on reactions to progressive protests in the post-Ferguson environment. OTL is not downstream of some cultural war nor an exotic right-wing, illiberal phenomenon. Situating personhood in the tradition of violent dispossession, I illuminate the practice’s liberal roots, before concluding OTL will be (if it is not already) US conservatism’s policy agenda, and an existential threat to progressive agitation.

Lance Simmens in his book, 'The Evolution of a Revolution: An Attack upon Reason, compromise, and Constitutional' makes several interesting arguments that are a reflection of our politics (society) today among which includes:- ☆The extreme polarization in our society today is a direct result of the lack of conviction, both as a set of principles or prosecution for committing crimes. ☆ Six general principles for setting the country on an appropriate course for redemption: 1. Reinstituting the value of public service, 2. Making government work, 3. Long-term thinking, 4. Balancing public and special interests, 5. Statesmanship, and 6. Removing the corrupting influence of money in politics. ☆ Lance further emphasizes the need to hold people countable for transgressions against common sense, intellect, and personal dignity lest we are crushed under the weight of our own greed and ignorance.

On September 17th at the Athena Cinema, Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries (The Ohio State University) will deliver the annual Constitution Day Lecture entitled, "Why the Constitution Won't Save Us from Ourselves." American democracy is straining under intense internal pressure generated by those who reject traditional political norms and place little to no value on multi-racial democracy. Some say that there is nothing to worry about because the Constitution will safeguard our democracy. But history suggests otherwise. This lecture will explore why the Constitution is not enough to save American democracy from the threat within. https://lnkd.in/e-Aax-h4

As usual an excellent, historically and reality based essay. The question is how to get those who understand the lessons of history, the nature of man and values of western civilization into our policy and political institutions and decision making positions? Critically how do we instill these lessons from history and western culture into our crucial educational institutions?
