Owning the Libs: The Contemporary Politics of Envy - https://lnkd.in/gb6e88ZC || PDF: https://lnkd.in/gFWr7Mq8 This essay defines Owning the Libs (OTL), a logic of envy, characterized by a subject’s need to both deny another enjoyment and to frustrate the capacity of these political opponents to live. My case studies focus on reactions to progressive protests in the post-Ferguson environment. OTL is not downstream of some cultural war nor an exotic right-wing, illiberal phenomenon. Situating personhood in the tradition of violent dispossession, I illuminate the practice’s liberal roots, before concluding OTL will be (if it is not already) US conservatism’s policy agenda, and an existential threat to progressive agitation.

In the latest episode of The Forge, I host the dissident political scientist Curtis Yarvin in a feline-friendly south east London flat. We address all manner of topics, from the treachery of our elites and the decline of mob power to the untold story of the American Revolution and the dramatic differences between traditional kingship and modernity's neo-monarchs. Is democratic populism up to the task of regime change? Or should we throw in our lot with a subtler, frame-breaking alternative? https://lnkd.in/eznMJzGx

“The modern obsession with progress, rationality, systems, and proceduralism has made us forget what a constitution is. Constitutions are a reflection of the spirit, nature, and culture of the people who live under them. A constitution is not some ironclad contract that cures the human condition. It is not a piece of political technology that solves the problem of a fallen humanity. When Americans started treating the Constitution as the soul of our nation, they naturally fell into a hollow proceduralism. With the metaphysical underpinnings of the nation now dependent on a dry and dusty document instead of a living and vibrant tradition, a new animating spirit rushed in and filled the void. This was the progressive spirit many call “wokeness.” It’s what happens when you pretend the responsibility to pass down a people’s values and culture can be delegated to a system. The animating spirit of the nation must be actively renewed by each generation. If those who interpret and apply the Constitution do not believe in and live out the values it embodies, the paper itself has no hope of stopping the total state." - Auron Macintyre -

How far is too far? And what hills should we die on? These are questions John Grove discusses in his review of "The Failure of American Conservatism and the Road Not Taken" by Claes G. Ryn. "But some alternatives being pitched by many factions of this “New Right” are nevertheless troubling, seeming to discard traditional conservative wisdom on decentralization, constitutionalism, civil society, and negotiated politics. Instead, this old wisdom is discarded in favor of a vision of politics as total war between preconceived visions of the good." Read his article here: https://buff.ly/3zg11P4

Authored by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay to appear anonymously in New York papers under the pseudonym "Publius" in 1787 and 1788, the Federalist Papers aimed to rally public support for the proposed Constitution of the United States. As such, it is one of the most important sources for understanding the original intent of the US Constitution by those who participated in its construction. In Federalist number one Alexander Hamilton sets forth the ambition of arguing the following positions in favor of the adoption of the Constitution: "I propose, in a series of papers, to discuss the following interesting particulars: THE UTILITY OF THE UNION TO YOUR POLITICAL PROSPERITY THE INSUFFICIENCY OF THE PRESENT CONFEDERATION TO PRESERVE THAT UNION THE NECESSITY OF A GOVERNMENT AT LEAST EQUALLY ENERGETIC WITH THE ONE PROPOSED, TO THE ATTAINMENT OF THIS OBJECT THE CONFORMITY OF THE PROPOSED CONSTITUTION TO THE TRUE PRINCIPLES OF REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT ITS ANALOGY TO YOUR OWN STATE CONSTITUTION and lastly, THE ADDITIONAL SECURITY WHICH ITS ADOPTION WILL AFFORD TO THE PRESERVATION OF THAT SPECIES OF GOVERNMENT, TO LIBERTY, AND TO PROPERTY." Articles and essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay under the collective pseudonym "Publius" to promote the ratification of the Constitution of the United States.
