By the way, there is a very great story about how Moldova became a maritime country and got these 480 metres of the Danube. I will tell it next time. Volia is a powerful Ukrainian concept. It is not just Freedom! Volia is a deeply rooted concept in Ukrainian culture and history that embodies the idea of freedom, liberty & the indomitable will to be independent. The term "Volia" (Воля in Ukrainian) carries a broad & profound meaning, encapsulating not just physical freedom from oppression, but also a spiritual & moral independence that is central to the Ukrainian identity. Cossack Legacy: The concept of Volia is closely tied to the historical experience of the Ukrainian Cossacks, who were known for their fierce independence and democratic traditions. The Zaporozhian Cossacks, in particular, established a society that valued freedom above all else. Their resistance to external control & their desire for self-governance are key expressions of Volia. Throughout Ukraine’s history, the struggle for Volia has been a recurring theme. From the resistance against Polish & russian rule in the early modern period to the fight for independence during the 20th century & the ongoing war with russia today, the pursuit of Volia has been a driving force behind Ukraine's national movements. Volia encompasses both individual & collective freedom. It reflects the idea that every person has the right to self-determination & autonomy, as well as the collective right of a nation to govern itself without external interference. Beyond political freedom, Volia also signifies moral independence. It is about having the freedom to follow one's own ethical principles & the courage to resist unjust authority. Volia is also about the strength and resilience to defend one's freedom. It implies a steadfast commitment to preserving independence, even in the face of adversity. The concept of Volia was vividly expressed during the EuroMaidan protests in 2013-2014, where Ukrainians stood up against corruption & external influence, demanding a free & democratic society. In many ways, the Revolution of Dignity was a modern embodiment of Volia, showing the world that Ukrainians are willing to fight for their freedom. Volia is also the willpower! In the current context, as Ukraine defends itself against russian aggression, Volia continues to be a powerful and unifying concept. It represents not just the fight for territorial integrity, but also the broader struggle to maintain Ukraine’s sovereignty & its place as a free and independent nation in the global community. Volia is more than just a word in the Ukrainian lexicon; it is a cornerstone of national identity. It encapsulates the spirit of the Ukrainian people - their resilience, their love for freedom, and their unwavering determination to live in a free, democratic, and sovereign state. It’s a concept that resonates deeply within the collective consciousness of the Ukrainian nation, shaping its past, present, & future. 💙 💛

https://lnkd.in/dhP7FX27 This article is in Russian, but it talks about what I think is a fascinating phenomenon in the last few years in Central Asia - which is that previously there were generally only flights between the capitals and major cities of each country (say, Tashkent to Almaty, Tashkent to Astana, Dushanbe to Almaty, Bishkek to Dushanbe, Bishkek to Tashkent, and so on). Now, there are flights from so-called secondary cities of one country (in this case Nukus in Uzbekistan) to the capitals or major cities of other countries (Almaty in Kazakhstan). More and more of these types of flights are occurring and I expect the trend to continue.
