I have had a lot of honest conversations with candidates recently around the state of the market and what it means for them. Some candidates were referred to me, others have worked with us in the past and then there are those that have applied for new opportunities. The crux of it is, the market is candidate heavy at the moment. As employers, we once again find ourselves a bit spoilt for choice after having previously worked to the demands of candidates and what they want. This has meant when speaking with some candidates, their expectations for salary/hourly rates is through the roof... Like the market this will shift and we will hopefully find ourselves back at a happy (and reasonable) medium - soon. While the market is candidate heavy, it is still nice to see some awesome opportunities coming through from our clients. They're getting the pick of the bunch at the moment too - now is a great time to hire! For those in the market, its tough. No rainbows and butterflies are going to sugarcoat that. Hang in there, it will shift. You will find yourself with multiple opportunities on the table and decisions to be made. Be reasonable in your expectations while also retaining your worth so you don't cancel yourself out of opportunities. A Day in the Life of a Remote Computer Helpdesk Technician For the past 15 years, I've had the privilege of working as a computer repair and helpdesk technician, a role that is as rewarding as it is challenging. Every day is a new adventure, filled with opportunities to solve problems and make a difference in the lives of those I assist. Morning Routine: The day typically begins with a review of pending tickets and prioritizing tasks. It's crucial to address urgent issues first, ensuring minimal disruption to users' workflows. Problem-Solving: Throughout the day, I tackle a variety of technical issues, from software glitches to hardware malfunctions. Each problem is unique, requiring a blend of technical knowledge and creative thinking to resolve efficiently. Communication: A significant part of my role involves communicating with users. Whether it's providing step-by-step guidance over the phone or crafting detailed email instructions, clear communication is key to ensuring users feel supported and informed. Continuous Learning: Technology is constantly evolving, and staying updated is essential. I dedicate time each day to learning about new tools and techniques, ensuring I can provide the best possible support. Team Collaboration: Collaboration with colleagues is vital. Sharing insights and strategies not only enhances our collective knowledge but also fosters a supportive work environment. End-of-Day Wrap-Up: As the day winds down, I review the day's accomplishments and prepare for the next. It's a moment to reflect on the impact made and the satisfaction of helping others navigate their tech challenges. I kicked things off at 25 as a first-level Help Desk technician, armed only with my high school diploma. But I didn’t stop there—I taught myself a ton online, eventually snagging a sysadmin job. For the past year, I've been in a managerial role as an IT Support Specialist in a big company, which has been a fantastic experience, especially since I really enjoy management. However, I’ve hit a bit of a wall. My current situation isn’t allowing me to grow much in either IT or management. So now I find myself at a bit of a crossroads... Here’s what I’m pondering: Option 1: Invest in IT management skills Pros: Moving up in the management hierarchy could lead to exciting opportunities. It’s a path that could diversify my skill set.
