This #HungerActionMonth, Dairy West is excited to announce our collaboration with Tackle Hunger to combat food insecurity across the nation. During this crucial month and throughout the year, we are committed to ensuring that essential dairy foods are within everyone’s reach. Milk, cheese and yogurt, while highly demanded, are seldom donated to food charities because they need refrigeration. Through our partnership with Tackle Hunger and their innovative donation map, you can help change this by making monetary donations directly to local food charities. These contributions will provide nutrient-rich dairy to those in dire need. This initiative spans 21 states, where regional dairy councils work tirelessly to ensure that donations reach our communities effectively. This effort not only feeds but also nourishes, supporting everything from children’s growth to adults' health. Jaclyn St. John MS, RDN, LD from Dairy West underscores the urgency: “With 13 million children facing food insecurity in our nation, our partnership with Tackle Hunger is crucial. CALLING all community non-profit and service organizations who want to be a part of the food insecurity solution by bringing a fun, interactive, community-building food drive event to your community.  While we’re all still enjoying the dog days of summer, it’s the perfect time to think about ‘Fall Fundraising’. With higher food prices and increasing shortages affecting us all, Sharecrows.org offers a creative, grassroots solution to restock community food banks by turning scarecrows into Sharecrows.  What’s a Sharecrow? A Sharecrow is a scarecrow display with a bin for collecting non-perishable food items to help restock local food banks. As communities across North America face varying degrees of food bank shortages, this is the perfect event to replenish food bank supplies. Sharecrows.org has introduced a straightforward Fall Food Drive event designed for non-profit/service organizations to host in their communities. They’ve done all the heavy event planning lifting and made it super easy for your organization to roll out. Sharecrows.org presents a triple-win opportunity for your organization to become a "Hunger Hero" and contribute to alleviating food insecurities. A win for food banks facing critical shortages. A win for the community to engage in a fun and interactive scarecrow food drive tour, fostering creativity, community building, and supporting a good cause. A win for your organization, as the funds raised can benefit local food banks and other community programs. Residents and storefront owners who register for participation commit to crafting a scarecrow, displaying it from October 20 to 31, placing a bin for non-perishable food items, and having their address on a Sharecrows Tour Map for residents to take tours, with a supply of ‘treats’ for the scarecrows along the way. On #WorldEnvironmentDay we’re highlighting The Oxford Food Hub – an Oxfordshire based food surplus charity that works alongside wholesalers, farmers and growers supporting food banks, warm spaces, homeless shelter, mental health support charities and children’s hospices. Recently celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, the charity is seeking to partner with more farmers and growers in the area as demand continues to soar during the cost of living crisis. The Waste And Resources Action Programme’s 2022 annual survey found that total redistributed food has increased by around 27% compared to 2021, which equates to 70 million more meals redistributed in that year. In fact Oxfordshire NFU Member and third-generation growers Rectory Farm are long-serving suppliers of the Hub. ❔❔Did You Know....❔❔ Our donations are made possible because of the food rescue programs larger organizations like Midwest Food Bank manage so that we can feed our community. 🌿 Donated items come in the form of: Close-dated items: Products that are close to their expiration date and don't have enough time to reach store shelves. Overruns: Extra products made beyond what was forecasted, often cheaper to keep the production line running. Mislabeled items: Products with packaging errors, like missing ingredients or allergen information. Relabeling is too costly, but we have the volunteer resources to repack and relabel these items.
