Imagine a world where everyone enjoys healthy meals, our environment thrives, and all food workers earn a decent living. Sounds great, right? But we are not there yet. Over 3 billion people can’t afford nutritious food, millions go hungry, and obesity is on the rise. Plus, many people working in #foodsystems barely make ends meet. We need a major food systems transformation to hit crucial targets like the #SDGs and the 2025 World Health Assembly targets. Let's work together to make our food system work for everyone, not just a few. In this brief, Anouk de Vries & Sharada Keats talk about the unique role of governments in food systems governance. #WHA76 #WHA77 https://lnkd.in/eK9ccbDg

Through our eco-foods programming focus, we attend to food safety issues linked with #nature drivers such #climate and weather conditions. In this case, issues like the higher chances of grains such as #maize and ground nuts being contaminated by #aflotoxins threaten not only people's health, food and income security, but also are a tough reminder that we ought to ensure a thriving and balanced eco and climate system. Aflotoxins consumption causes several health complications such as liver injury, abdominal pain, convulsions, retardation according to health studies. Check out the studies online and some respective guidelines on combating aflotoxins such as www.agriculture.go.ug Work with us via https://lnkd.in/e_dFGXEr Women in Nature Sustainability Network (WINN) Dr. Juliet Katusiime Zizinga🏞️

Yesterday, November 3rd 2024 was #OneHealthDay, a global campaign that highlights the need to take a #OneHealth approach to solve shared health threats at the human-animal-environment interface. Cefas takes a One Health approach to sustainable food production and you can find out more here: 🌍 our contributions at the World One Health Congress https://bit.ly/4dWC7CE 🍽️ research paper on “One Health” for food systems https://bit.ly/40AsqXh 🐟 Sustainable aquaculture via a One Health lens https://lnkd.in/eU6FNQSS 🦐 The One Food programme for One Health https://bit.ly/3UzGZXn Cefas' Chief Scientist, Grant Stentiford commented on the One Food programme, “Food systems on land and in the water offer tremendous potential to act as a focal point for policies aimed to embed One Health – making healthier plants and animals that benefit people, and which have much reduced burden on nature and climate change. The One Food programme is looking to place hazard control, such as diseases, contaminants etc., at the centre of this new approach – reducing production losses, avoiding waste in the supply chain, making food safer to eat and ultimately, reducing the footprint of the food system to realise One Health benefits." #OneHealth #OneHealthDay

#RES_Focus Title:FAO’s 1.5 °C roadmap for food systems falls short Authors:Cleo Verkuijl, Jan Dutkiewicz, Laura Scherer, Paul Behrens, Michael Lazarus, Maria José Hötzel, Rebecca Nordquist & Matthew Hayek Abstract: The first instalment of the FAO food systems roadmap is a key step in identifying pathways to achieve zero hunger without breaching the 1.5 °C climate change threshold. But future instalments should be more methodologically transparent, emphasize the need to reduce animal-sourced food consumption and align with a holistic One Health approach. Between 691 and 738 million people globally were affected by hunger in 2022, yet almost 3 billion are living with obesity or are overweight*. Following Greenbank’s recent report 'Sustainable food systems and systemic risks', stewardship and engagement lead Sophie Lawrence explains why the Investor Coalition on Food Policy exists, why investors should focus on sustainable food systems, and the role the Coalition plays to promote health and resilience. 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘁? Here's our food reading selection of the week. 1- 📑 "𝙐𝙡𝙩𝙧𝙖-𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙙𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨: 𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙥𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙖-𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙮𝙨𝙚𝙨". Ultra-processed food (UPF) is directly linked to 32 harmful effects to health, including a higher risk of heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, adverse mental health and early death, according to the world’s largest review of its kind. 👉https://lnkd.in/eTzvZ7cm So let's stop debating about whether UPFs are harmful, and while we work on further understanding the mechanisms that lead to those harmful outcomes, let's get started and do something about it. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eq-7xjqd 2- 📰 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙐𝙋𝙁𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙖𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚. Excellent article from Anthony Fardet and Michel Duru on the environmental impact of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Long story short: the UPF industry foments single-culture intensive farming (soy, palm oil, ...), which significantly contributes to: ❗ emissions (amongst which GHG > climate change) ❗ water run-off quality ❗ biodiversity ❗ soil pollution 👉 https://lnkd.in/dugy3MwY... 3- 💪 Bite Back "𝙁𝙪𝙚𝙡 𝙪𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙪𝙨 " 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙜𝙣. Kudos to Dev Sharma and the whole youth activist group, you are an inspiration! The majority of the biggest food and drink manufacturers – 7 out of 10 to be exact – are reliant on selling unhealthy products in the UK. 👉https://lnkd.in/d-QpDaVr #upf #ultraprocessedfood #health #fuelusdontfoolus #sustainablefood
