Between 691 and 738 million people globally were affected by hunger in 2022, yet almost 3 billion are living with obesity or are overweight*. Following Greenbank’s recent report 'Sustainable food systems and systemic risks', stewardship and engagement lead Sophie Lawrence explains why the Investor Coalition on Food Policy exists, why investors should focus on sustainable food systems, and the role the Coalition plays to promote health and resilience. Imagine a world where everyone enjoys healthy meals, our environment thrives, and all food workers earn a decent living. Sounds great, right? But we are not there yet. Over 3 billion people can’t afford nutritious food, millions go hungry, and obesity is on the rise. Plus, many people working in #foodsystems barely make ends meet. We need a major food systems transformation to hit crucial targets like the #SDGs and the 2025 World Health Assembly targets. Let's work together to make our food system work for everyone, not just a few. In this brief, Anouk de Vries & Sharada Keats talk about the unique role of governments in food systems governance. #WHA76 #WHA77 https://lnkd.in/eK9ccbDg

Inequalities in food security exists in all regions of the world, both among and within countries. Often, multiple discriminations and disadvantages amplify marginalization, thus leading to hunger and all forms of malnutrition. Addressing these inequalities and 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 is at the center of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝐂𝐅𝐒) is currently developing policy recommendations on “Reducing Inequalities for Food Security and Nutrition” that will hopefully have a meaningful impact on these issues. Switzerland believes that strengthening agency - the capacity of individuals to make their own informed decisions about what food they eat, how food is produced, processed and distributed, and their representation and involvement in decision making - is key to reducing inequalities. #inequality #sustainabledevelopment #righttofood

🌍 The hidden costs in our food systems 🍎 The FAO’s 2024 report highlights a powerful truth: the hidden costs of our global food systems add up to $11.6 trillion. Health problems like diet-related diseases take up to 10% of GDP in some areas, while environmental and social costs can reach 20% and 18% of GDP in crisis-affected regions 🌱💔. True Cost Accounting (TCA) reveals how much our food systems impact health, society, and the planet, pushing us to rethink how we grow and consume food 🌾🥄. My Reflection: To tackle these hidden costs, we need a One-Health approach that links the health of people, animals, and the environment. Real change requires a full transformation of our food systems—from stronger, more sustainable supply chains to policies that prevent issues before they become crises 🌎🐄. Citizen engagement is essential too; our choices and actions help drive demand for sustainable practices 🌽💪. And social innovation connects high-level goals to real-life community actions, building food systems that are resilient and community-centered. In 2022, 345 million people were still suffering from hunger, while 2.5 billion adults were overweight*. Our agricultural policies, but also our consumption habits, including food waste, must also evolve to become more sustainable. The agri-food sector is thus at the heart of social priorities. Discover our SRI Chronicles, with an editorial by Jean-Philippe Desmartin, dedicated to the need to embrace the long term, and a news on the failings of our agri-food production systems. #AssetManagement #EdRConvictions #SRIChronicles * source, World Health Organisation, 2024.
