Kirsty Harrison, Associate Professor in Speech and Language Therapy at UEA, has been awarded the first NIHR MND Association Doctoral Fellowship in motor neurone disease (MND) research by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), in partnership with the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association. Her three-year fellowship, will focus on co-developing a self-management intervention for people living with MND: “This research is about making eating, drinking, and swallowing easier, safer, and more enjoyable while giving people more control over these aspects of their lives.” MND is a neurodegenerative disease, characterised by loss of motor neurone function. Kirsty’s research aims to improve care with an accessible, practical resource that people living with the disease, their loved ones, and healthcare professionals can rely on for support. Today I had the pleasure to present with someone in my network about some of the research I did this summer with regards to making an accessible website for neurodivergent individuals at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia! Great to share some of my research I did with surveying and doing an information session with neurodivergent adults was put into practice. This is my 4th research conference that I've shared thus far (including undergraduate and graduate school) Here is the presentation I did with my team today #neurodiversity #websiteaccess #research

Boston University’s latest research insights span vital issues in health, social equity, and technology, highlighting BU's commitment to innovation and inclusivity. The Brink Bites roundup offers a glimpse into projects like the Boston University School of Social Work’s collaboration with Salem, Mass., through the Boston University Center for Aging and Disability Education and Research (CADER), aiming to boost behavioral health support for older adults in the community. Another study from the Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center (BMC) tackles racial disparities in cancer trials, underscoring the critical importance of diversity in clinical research and equitable access to life-saving treatments. BU’s breakthroughs also delve into technological advancements, with physicists Andrei Ruckenstein and Claudio Chamon, alongside computer scientist Ran Canetti, partnering with the University of Central Florida and Cornell University on a National Science Foundation (NSF)–funded project. This interdisciplinary team explores physics-based solutions to enhance encrypted data security. And for a captivating look at the microscopic world, BU students showcased stunning images in the inaugural Rajen Kilachand Center for Integrated Life Sciences & Engineering, Boston University’s research photo contest. The snapshots, including insights into the songbird brain and neuron structure, highlight the inspiring breadth of discovery happening at #BU. A very enjoyable afternoon at the Bisnow UK Life Sciences summer event yesterday with two very thought-provoking panel discussions (one of which was expertly moderated by my colleague Chris Xitsas!) It was interesting to hear from experts what the (current) key criteria are to create a successful life sciences cluster, including: access to teaching hospitals, academia, research institutions, transport links, affordable housing, power (and backup power) supply. The need for investment into the wider infrastructure for the players in UK life sciences to thrive is clearly a hot topic and it will be interesting to see what the new Labour government can promise (and deliver!) to encourage this. Some other key takeaways from the event: the influence of AI and data centres on the advances of UK life sciences and tech will be huge; it’s no longer “location location location” but more like “infrastructure infrastructure infrastructure” with a growing interest in areas outside the golden triangle (so don’t ignore the corridors that link Oxford and Cambridge to London); UK life sciences players need space - space to grow into, space to store, space to collaborate; and the main theme of the day was flexibility at all levels, from incubators to developers to landlords to investors, this is a growing and changing industry and what was important to occupiers even two years ago is different today. There is a real need for connection and collaboration within UK life sciences and tech to create thriving ecosystems.

Join us for our 4th annual Labs to Leaders event at Medical University of South Carolina, a premier gathering dedicated to fostering research and innovation within our community. We are honored to announce Harris Eyre MD PhD, a distinguished Fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy, as our keynote speaker. His insights into the brain-positive economic transition promise to inspire and challenge our current perspectives on neuroscience and public policy. Following the lecture, MUSC trainees will present their work in a lay friendly manner in the lobby of the Bioengineering (BE) building. This is a fantastic opportunity to present your research, share your project's impact on disease understanding and community health, and build strong connections with the community we aim to serve. For those interested in presenting, we will be hosting a poster building workshop on March 19th from 4-6 pm in BSB 302 for those seeking guidance or for anyone who wants to create their poster with friends. This workshop is designed to enhance your presentation skills, with optional drop-in attendance. Mark your calendars and join us in this enriching experience that bridges research with real-world application.
