Are actions taken in schools, colleges and universities to prevent self‐harm and suicide in young people up to the age of 25 effective? Self‐harm and suicide in young people are significant #publichealth issues that cause distress for young people, their friends and other young people they spend time with, and communities. Actions to prevent suicide and self‐harm address the factors that can be changed, including building strengths that protect young people. 🔎 A #Cochrane review of 51 studies with 36,414 young people aimed to assess the effects of interventions delivered in educational settings to prevent or address self‐harm and suicidal ideation in young people (up to the age of 25) and examine whether the relative effects on self‐harm and suicide are modified by education setting. Key messages: 📌 We remain uncertain about the impact of interventions in education settings to reduce self‐harm. 📌 There are some encouraging findings, but we need large studies to confirm them, and studies that examine the combination of different intervention approaches that are co‐designed with young people, can be delivered in a safe environment and implemented over a long period of time. ➡️ Read the full review here: https://lnkd.in/d3ynrMWD #MentalHealthMatters #YouthWellbeing #CochraneEvidence #PublicHealth #SelfHarmPrevention #SuicidePrevention #EducationMatters

How accurate are cognitive assessment tools at detecting #dementia? 👩👧👦 The number of people diagnosed with dementia is expected to increase significantly in the future because global populations are living longer. Accurate and quick diagnosis allows people with dementia and their families to access treatment and support. 📝 Self-administered cognitive assessment tools are designed for individuals to evaluate their own mental capacity. While these tools cannot replace detailed clinical assessments, they hold potential for use in scenarios where face-to-face evaluations are challenging—such as during pandemics or in regions with limited medical services. 📊 A recent #CochraneReview analysed 11 studies with 2303 participants to assess the accuracy of six different self-administered tools in detecting dementia. Key findings: ✅ Self-administered cognitive assessment tools could be used in the detection and diagnosis of dementia. ✅ No single tool stands out as the best option based on current evidence. ✅ Further research on the use of these assessment tools in different settings, such as clinics or people's homes, and the scores that indicate dementia is needed. 📖 Read the full #CochraneReview and the #PlainLanguage summary in the #CochraneLibrary - https://lnkd.in/dbHGMKHB #CognitiveHealth #Research #HealthInnovation #SystematicReview

What are the benefits and risks of intravenous versus oral iron for treating iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy? Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a condition caused by insufficient levels of iron in the blood, affecting how well the blood can carry oxygen throughout the body. People with IDA can experience fatigue, weakness, headaches, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Iron therapies help increase the amount of available iron in the blood and can increase haemoglobin levels, provided there are no other causes of anaemia. The two main forms of iron therapy are intravenous (injected into a vein) and oral (by mouth). This #SystematicReview evaluates whether intravenous iron is better than oral iron at treating iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy and examines any unwanted effects. The review analysed 13 studies involving a total of 3939 pregnant women with iron deficiency anaemia. Key findings: 👉 Intravenous iron is likely better at treating anaemia caused by a lack of iron during pregnancy than oral iron. 👉Intravenous iron may result in little to no difference in heavy bleeding after childbirth and likely results in little to no difference in need for blood transfusion compared to oral iron. 👉Serious unwanted effects were rare and may not be increased with intravenous iron compared to oral iron. 📖 Read the full #CochraneReview and the #PlainLanguage summary in the #CochraneLibrary - https://lnkd.in/ghWJR_Pa Nicholson L, Axon E, Daru J, Rogozińska E. 🌐£10 million global consortium to advance evidence synthesis in climate and health Cochrane is proud to be part of DESTINY, a new global consortium transforming how research evidence connects climate change and human health. Supported by a £10.2 million Wellcome Trust grant, this initiative will develop new AI-driven tools to make evidence synthesis faster, more efficient and continuously updated. The tools aim to automate and streamline tasks such as detecting relevant individual studies, extracting and synthesising their respective findings and identifying overarching insights. 🎤 Karla Soares-Weiser, Cochrane Editor-in-Chief: “Climate change poses one of the greatest threats to human health, so this project is both vital and timely. The DESTINY project has the potential to transform evidence synthesis for climate and health, equipping decision-makers with the evidence they need to make informed decisions. Climate change is a key research priority in Cochrane’s scientific strategy, while methodological innovation is one of our core commitments. The project will enable us to further these goals in collaboration with partners across the world, all bringing our own strengths to deliver the best outcomes.” The project brings together a diverse team of leading organizations, including Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) gGmbH, The Campbell Collaboration, UCL, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, and eBASE Africa, to ensure global perspectives and equitable outcomes. Cochrane will co-lead efforts to ensure that the technology can be used equitably across the world. 👉 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dqmAFBCv #Cochrane #ClimateHealth #AI #EvidenceSynthesis #GlobalHealth #Equity #HumanHealth #ArtificialIntelligence #ResearchSynthesis

Is resistance training an effective treatment for fatigue in people diagnosed with cancer? Cancer‐related fatigue (CRF) is a feeling of extreme tiredness that lasts for a long time. It can come from cancer or cancer therapy, or both. It affects both the body and mood, and makes it hard to perform regular activities. This #SystematicReview synthesises evidence from 21 studies involving 2221 participants with various types of cancer to evaluate the effects of resistance training on CRF and quality of life. Key insights: 👉 Resistance training during cancer therapy has the potential to improve fatigue and quality of life. 👉 Resistance training after cancer therapy may improve quality of life a little. 👉 More research could help understand the effects of resistance training before cancer therapy. 📖 Read the full #CochraneReview and the #PlainLanguage summary in the #CochraneLibrary - https://lnkd.in/danKnBBc Ernst M, Wagner C, Oeser A, Messer S, Wender A, Cryns N, Bröckelmann PJ, Holtkamp U, Baumann FT, Wiskemann J, Monsef I, Scherer RW, Mishra SI, Skoetz N.
