Ever wonder how to build a $100MM+ company without creating the next big thing? Episode 2️⃣ is out! Thanks to everyone that liked, subscribed, and shared the last episode [https://lnkd.in/ewMzD9B2] of my podcast Elsewhere Alpha. This week, I talked to Chet K., Founding Partner at IKONA Partners, about raising capital, the market outlook for lower / middle market software businesses, and building a bullet-proof company for a strong exit. One interesting topic we touched on was all the opportunities for software to drive efficiencies in historically inefficient businesses. Think of a problem you have at work that involves a spreadsheet or a manual process. That can become a software application. Will that get you the beach house you've always wanted? Maybe, maybe not...a lot goes into it (which we get into). But the point is that your average worker has a lot of operating expertise that can get packed into a marketable software application. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/eatT8JyA

Do you want to raise capital or sell? When talking to founders, I’ve noticed that often founders are split evenly between raising capital or selling. What I hear is: I’d be willing to raise growth capital and take the business to the next level OR I’d also be willing to sell the business and take the money and walk away from the business clean or shift roles to help the acquirer grow the business. In my recent interview with serial acquirer Kevin McArdle from Big Band Software, he talks about how if you’re a founder, take the time to reflect on your exit plan. He’s developed a process called the annual exit planning process that helps founders get clear on their exit plan because if you’re stuck between raising capital or selling, you’re likely doing yourself a disservice and confusing the people you’re looking to raise from or sell to. Episode 26 of our Investor Insights series features Martin Davis, Chief Executive Officer of Molten Ventures. The Venture Capital investment company sector has suffered the full force of the shift in market sentiment as one of the steepest periods of rising interest rates in history significantly impacted the funding environment, the cost of capital and the workings of primary capital markets. However, despite this challenging period, there remains an important and persistent trend of businesses staying private for longer, meaning a greater share of wealth creation by successful, digitally-enabled business models is being generated by private investors before listing. Against this backdrop, this was a timely point to speak to the CEO of one of the largest listed VC investment companies in Europe. In the latest episode of Future Squared podcast, I spoke with Australian and former Head of Product at UBER’s Developer Platform, Chris Saad. Chris noted that: 1) despite the larger pool of VC dry powder in Australia, capital is actually scarce and controlled by a few big players 2) Aussie investors are risk averse and typically looking for ‘derisked’ B2B opportunities, as they are often investing on behalf of large conservative super funds 3) Aussie investors are, for the most part, unsophisticated when it comes to investing in high-growth venture scale returns companies, something Canva’s Cliff Obrecht echoed when talking about the company’s prospective NASDAQ listing in 2026 We’ve no doubt come a long way since the noughties, when there wasn't much of a startup or VC landscape to speak of... but are we still, in Chris’ words, “about twenty years behind”? Is the gap between Australia and the US getting smaller or bigger? What do you think?
