There is a huge shortage of affordable housing in Georgia, leading many lower-income families to rent. However, rents are also increasing with high demand, leaving low-income families in a precarious position. To keep costs low for the families we serve, Habitat for Humanity offers zero-interest mortgages. The availability of quality, affordable housing has been a persistent challenge for the people of Mississippi. Even when housing is available, families are forced to make hard decisions between paying rent and acquiring other necessities like food and healthcare. In fact, a minimum wage earning Mississippian has to work 93 hours a week to afford a modest, one bedroom rental at fair market rent. Together, we're bringing hope and stability to those in the Roanoke Valley who are facing homelessness or housing insecurity. Through collaborative efforts, we're committed to ensuring that homelessness is rare, brief, and non-reoccurring. In 2023, our three housing programs made a significant impact, providing nearly $400,000 in financial assistance for rent and utility support. This support prevented homelessness and secured housing for 286 households, including 98 children. But our work extends beyond numbers; it's transforming lives. Each statistic represents a story of hope and resilience. However, the need in the Roanoke Valley remains urgent. As housing costs soar and economic uncertainties persist, more individuals and families need help. This situation requires us all to take action, so we launched FreeRentATL to bring awareness to the widening wealth gap and offer crucial support to struggling renting families in Atlanta.
